Thanks Midterm Essay Exam—227—Short Fiction
Wed, June 5th—In Class
Answer two of the following five questions with short, thesis-driven essays.
Answering more than two questions will NOT result in extra credit and if more than two
essays appear on the completed exam, only the first two will be graded.
MAKE CLEAR which questions you are answering—numbering is sufficient.
In your essay, do NOT make use of outside examples. Valid texts are listed below.
While preparing and writing, keep in mind that PRECISION (concision, not deprivation) is
valued over quantity. Remember that one strong argument, one strong thesis in an essay, is
valued over several fledgling thoughts.
In class, you will be allowed to have a word processing program open on your laptop or
tablet. Nothing else. If you prefer to use paper and pen, that is fine. Bring your own. You
will be allowed to use your books and the printed stories and this printed prompt and your
handwritten notes and the printed lectures. Again, you should not use texts outside of class
materials. (Do not use SparkNotes, etc.—I’ve heard it all already. You’ll also be penalized.
Use this as an opportunity to say something original.)
Exams must be completed by the end of the class period.
Usable Texts
Groff, “The Midnight Zone”
Barthelme, “The School”
Bradfield, “The Darling”
Banks, “Sarah Cole: A Type of Love Story”
Capo-Crucet, “Drift”
Thon, “X-mas, Jamaica Plain”
Wolff, “Hunters in the Snow”
Johnson, “Car Crash While Hitchhiking”
Oates, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” (Vintage)
Jones, “A Rich Man” (Canvas)
Watson, “Against Specificity” (Canvas)
Moore, “The Jewish Hunter” (Canvas)
Reva, “Novostroïka” (BASS)
Questions (Answer two out of five, each with a short thesis-driven essay.)
1. Many of our course readings have focused on romantic relationships. Write an essay
that makes a specific argument about how one character’s background and social
situation, as well as the story’s environment, affect the way he/she/they view and
create a love life. Consider the reasons for why the character makes decisions and
include specific details. [FOCUS ON ONE CHARACTER FROM ONE STORY]
2. Point-of-view (POV) plays a huge role in how we understand a story and how we
interpret what it is about. Pull from class discussions and lecture notes on POV to
write an argued interpretation about the role POV plays in a specific story. Consider
the ways 1st, 2nd, 3rd, OR omniscient POV determines the way the readers get
information in this particular story, as well as the information it both limits and
selects. Be sure to include the ways POV caused you to arrive at your interpretation.
[FOCUS ON ONE STORY. AIM TO MENTION AT LEAST FIVE WAYS POV
FUNCTIONS IN THIS STORY]
3. Barth defines plot in this way: “The incremental perturbation of an unstable
homeostatic system and its catastrophic restoration to a complexified equilibrium.”
Select a story from above and write an essay that details the way the story embodies
this definition of plot. Be sure to be zero in on at least four (4) points: incremental
perturbation, unstable homeostatic system, catastrophic restoration, complexified
equilibrium. [FOCUS ON ONE STORY]
4. Identity has played a huge role in our recent readings. Select three (3) of the above
stories to write an argued essay about the ways characters come, or don’t come, to
understand/explain themselves. Consider epiphanies. Pay attention to the ways
characters address or create, play into or act counter to, stereotypes or cultural
expectations.
5. “Great art judges us—not the other way around” is a popular saying in higher
education, particularly in arts and humanities courses. All the same, it’s difficult to
enter a work of art—a story, unless the reader relates to something in it. In a detailed
essay, write about why you did relate to one of the above stories, as well as why you
didn’t relate to another of the above stories. [WORK WITH TWO STORIES]
