LeadershipLearning Paper

Assignment Structure

Your essay should be structured around two key sections.

Part 1: You as a Leader: The Context of You, What You Understand About Yourself

In the first part of this paper, use your learning from this course to assess what you have learned about your own abilities, preferences, strengths, and areas of development regarding your leadership and how you work with others. Be sure to place this learning in the context of your prior experiences. Your goal with this section is to determine what you want/need to work on as you expand your leadership skill set and capabilities so that you are well positioned to achieve your next career aspirations.

The following questions need not be specifically addressed but are designed to spark your thinking about your own leadership:

  • Over the semester, we have done numerous self-assessments (e.g. DiSC, Developmental Network Exercise, Coaching Exercises, Careers Assessments). What have you learned about yourself from these assessments? What surprised you about these assessments?

Assessment has been attached

  • When in the course were you most surprised, challenged, or had your prior beliefs about leadership and working with others upended? What in your background, identity, experience led you to these beliefs? What did you learn and how is this important to your growth as a leader?
  • Over the semester, you have received feedback from your peers, from a development learning partner, and from faculty and staff. What feedback has been most surprising or challenging to you? How have you grown from this feedback?
    • Even If I know the right answer, I should try to listen and ask questions to understand other’s point of view. Also try to explain my idea in a way they can relate and understand to gain support.
  • Consider whether there was an organization, leader, or classmate from the course that you found particularly inspiring. What was it that impressed you and in what ways will you use that inspiration and learning? (You could also use an organization or leader that totally turned you off, and explain why). What does all this mean for your thinking about your future as a leader, and in your career?
    • Other than being late to class, Issa has been an inspiration for me for few reasons. First, he has the domain knowledge in fiancé and accounting. He is humble with sharing his knowledge. I had few conversations with him about my business plan. He gave me a very long and detailed feedback. I learned from him that relationships and networks are a slow process. I need to plan that seed buy helping everyone I can. Some of the seeds get planted in bas soil but some turn to beatify flowers (meaningful relationship)

As you write your essay, make sure you discuss your strengths and areas of development regarding your leadership. You also want to make sure you support your self-assessment by integrating different sources of data and theory. This could include:

  • In-class exercises such aspersonal vision and ideal self-exercise, DiSC, developmental network assignment
    • That exercise helped me know where the strength and the weaknesses in my network is. my network consists of a lot of mentors and coaches which is not surprising to me because I am generally a very cereus person who like to ask for explanation and advices. That how I have grown to what I am today. a valuable member of my family business and a student in the best school in the world. The problem in my network comes from the lack of sponsors. I realized that I have no one to sponsor me. I asked myself what will happen if I am in a company and have no sponsor?would any one promoteme? or would anyone fight for my bonus salary ?
    • I definitely need to work on changing the way I deal with everyone I meet. I should not treat a mentor like a sponsor. A mentor I can ask for an advice but a sponsor; I need to show him my skills and ability to get the work done.
  • Self-reflection from your ROE journals or in general based on what you have learned about working with others, building high quality relationships, networking, conflict, influence and building inclusive cultures

Connecting what I have read with Babson experiential learning is fantastic.  I have learned a lot during my first ten days of interaction with my team. I have learned that being an entrepreneur is not an easy thing to do. There is a lot of stuff that comes in creating a successful business.

From my team, I have learned that we need to communicate our thoughts and challenge each other’s ideas to make it better. However, we should not spend most of our time planning. We should follow the saying ” GET OUT OF THE BUILDING!” to talk to customers. You can debate ideas, but can’t discuss facts.

From the readings, I have learned that Business module is much better than making a business plan. The reason the business plan is going to work perfectly is that no one cat plan the future correctly.

As I am working for my startup idea in the Edtech industry, I believe that I am building a strong foundation in this class.\

The more I learn about leadership, the more I realized I still have more to learn. Reading class material and listening to class discussions has been full of lessons for me as a leader. Two of my biggest learning lessons for me are about my strength as a team player and my ability to negotiate.

From DISC, I learned that I am great at motivating people. However, while working in my BetaX project with my teammates, I found myself demotivated to work if all my ideas are brushed aside. To work with that issue, I ask for feedback all the time from my teammate. I try to use that window to also share my feedback on one on one bases to gain support and learn about the other party disagreements. Going forward, I will always ask for feedback because that is the way I learn and improve.

The lecturer on corporate politics a negotiation taught me to work with “hard to deal with” people. I come from a family business that has plenty of drama, illogical arguments, and fights for the money. The problem from my point of view is that no one is focusing on the big picture where everyone is a winner. For example, My father thinks we are taking over his business. On the other hand, we believe our father is selfish. Going forward, I should learn about everyone’s fears, interests, and goals. By doing so, it might be the start of a new family relationship when the right work can be done, and everyone is happy.

I believe leadership is something that I read once and practice it for the rest of my life. I look forward to learning more and practice what I learn with my friends, teammates, and family.

  • Practical experiences with your team and/or meeting with board of advisors each week.
    • I realized that no team is perfect. Most of the teams I have been a part off looks great in the beginning. Than issues start to rise and disagreement. Some people take it personally and some don’t. I learned to relax when I am talking to my team and understand that we come from a very diverse background.
  • Feedback from your peers, faculty, and/or your development learning partner.
    • My team believes that I bring a lot of positive energy to team work and that makes work more fun and exciting. They also believe that I hve great insights because I always read the news and a lot of business books.
  • Feedback, work you have done through CCD and VMock Career Fit (AI assessment tool to determine your fit/skill gaps towards a target career/industry function to prioritize your career preparation and planning)
    • As I am looking to apply for a product management position, I released that I lake management skills and product development skills.
    • I will aim to find an internship that can fill the gaps in my leadership and product management skills. I have bought few books that I can read today about product management

Part 2: Your Action Agenda: What you need and want and how you will try to accomplish it

Now that you have a clearer understanding of yourself as a leader, consider what all this means about your future as a leader and in your career. Create a specific action learning agenda for how you will develop yourself to be well positioned to achieve your near termcareer aspirations (think graduation to 5 years).  How will you build your leadership skill set and capabilities throughout the next year?

The following questions can be useful to help you build your action plan:

  • What are your leadership development goals as well as career opportunities you are exploring and what implications does your self-reflection/analysis have on your ability to achieve these aspirations?

  • What strengths can you capitalize on to help you achieve your aspirations?
    • My stringh comes from te ability to work with other and diffrant type of personalites. I spent all my life moving from location to another, so I consider myself good at meeting new people.
    • I will make sure I am a kick ass at belding meanifule relationship in business
    • Also I I am a very enusiastic person and that always keep the energy of the team up. I will make sure I maintain that energer on the bad days as well

  • What skills, competencies, or knowledge gaps have you identified that you need to develop?
    • My biggest problem is the oter side of my strength, Demotivation. When I am not motivated. I tend to stop working. I faced that issue with my team when I started to be faced with resestance to all my good ideas that over time showed to be the right moves to do. For example, I was a aganist our BetaX produt because it is a mess of high-end camra, a mouth wash and an APP. That sounds like 3 products not one. I however presented them with an idea that is a simple sliution to a big problem that can be prototyped. I belive it was my failier for not being able to communicate that to my team.
    • Going forward, I will try diffrant methods to communicate with myteam such as listen more and ask qustions to lead the conversation in a better way than having “ who’s idea is better” debate.
  • How will you make use of your experience to move forward with your professional development and career goals?
    • My goal is to work as a manager in of the big companies such as amazon and apple but also be available to help my family improve their business.
    • What do you want, need to learn to achieve your aspirations for yourself and your career? How can you do this in or out of the classroom? What courses, co-curricular opportunities do you want to make use of?
      • I will make my MBA story oriented in a way where I can work with more people to practicebeing a good teammate in my future career. I will try to be the presedent of GSC. By doing so I can work on improving my leadership skills.
      • Some of the classes I am planning to take are stratigeic human resursas for managers, product design and development, buying a small business and real estate modeling. These classes will help me enhance my leadership, get me a career in product management and make me an assest for my family’s business.
  • What are key relationships you need to build to move towards your aspirations?
    • I need to meet more sponsors. I realized that I have no sponsors in my network that are welling to share new project with me or stand for me when I am not in the room.
    • How will these relationships help you with your leadership and career development?
      • By having more sponsors in my network, I can leverage my skills to take advantage of new jobs after my MBA. But this won’t be enough. I need to make sure I have the skills to deliver on these opportunities when they come.
    • How do you intend to build those relationships?
      • I will use linked in to meet with as many alumnus as I can. I will try learn about them and share with them what I am learning. I thank that is subtle and safe way to build these relationships.
    • How will you evaluate your progress and adjust as necessary?
      • What metrics will you use?
      • How will you seek and gain feedback?
      • How will you track your progress and hold yourself accountable?

Your action learning agenda should not merely be a list of possible activities.  Be sure to connect your agenda to how it will help propel you forward to build your leadership skills and achieve your near term career aspirations.  Remember that Part I and Part II should connect so that you have demonstrated what you know and understand about yourself as a leader and how you will take ownership of continuing to develop yourself over time.
