Laramie County Community College Hebrew Bible Old Testament Project Essay and PPT Will attach requirement as screen shots………………………………………….. RESEARCH PROJECT
Podcast or Video Essay (Group or Individual)
Students will produce a 15 – 20-minute podcast or video essay on an event, person, or topic of
their choice relevant to the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible. Reception history is also fair game if
you are more interested in researching the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible in Jewish, Christian,
Islamic, or other religious/political receptions. The only limitation placed on content is that the
podcast must be the product of academic inquiry. You are free to make use of theological tools
of inquiry in addition to various methods of biblical criticism, but the podcast should not be
devotional in nature.
You are free to work in groups of 2-5 or by yourself. The goal of this project is to introduce
students to the skills of research writing and how they can be applied to more popular media
formats. Students will be required to complete specific subsections of the assignment, but the
format and content of the podcast will be left up to their discretion. There is a lot of leeway in
how you can approach this assignment, so be creative and have fun!
Sample Styles and Topics
1. Investigative Journalism (e.g. Serial, S-Town, Lore, etc.) – Students can choose an event
that can be explained in multiple ways and which may have been covered up in the
biblical account (e.g. the murder of Athaliah, Josiah’s Reform). In the podcast, students
will take on the role of a journalist trying to find the real story behind the story preserved
in the Bible.
2. Political Debate (e.g. NPR) – Students can choose a legal tradition or current event’ (e.g.
Sabbath laws, the refugee crisis in Jerusalem) to explore from different perspectives.
Students will roleplay representatives of major biblical perspectives (e.g. Israelites v.
Judahites, Deuteronomists v. Holiness Scribes, prophets v. priests) and debate the topic.
3. Popular Research (e.g. Stuff You Should Know, Throughline, Hardcore History) –
Students can choose a little known or poorly understood topic, person, or event from the
Old Testament and have a structured conversation to give their audience a broad
overview.
4. Writer’s Room (e.g. Story Break) – Choose a character or event from the Old Testament
and pitch me a film or television pilot based on it. How would you break that character or
event down into 3-5 acts? How would you retell or amplify the story based on your
research?
5. Audio Drama (c.g. Limetown, Audible Originals) – Choose a story to dramatize and
retell. It should be amplified based on your original rescarch.
Graded Elements
1. Logline (10%) – Tell me in two sentences what the point of your podcast is. What is the
thesis you are arguing or topic you are exploring? Who is your audience? What style will
you use to effectively express your topic to that audience? I will critique this assignment
but grade it based on completeness.
2. Outline (10%) – Give me a written structure for your podcast (which topics you will
cover in what order, who in the group is responsible for what, etc.). Also provide a rough
timeline for completing each element of your podcast. I will critique this assignment but
grade it based on completeness.
3. Rough script (10%) – The podcast format leaves a lot of room open for adhoc additions
and improvisation, but you should have a clear idea of what you will say before you
begin recording. Turn in a rough draft script for your podcast ahead of time. I may give
you some notes on your script, but this will be graded based on completeness.
4. Bibliography (10%) – List off the sources you compiled to create your podcast. Not
including the Bible or Carr’s textbook, you must draw upon at least 5 sources and
preferably more. I may suggest some new sources or tell you to avoid others, but this will
be graded on completeness.
5. Show Notes (10%) – Turn in a 2-3 paragraph summary of your podcast with your sources
and suggestions for further reading. 20 minutes is not enough time to fully cover any
topic, so this space is for you to show me that you have done even further research and
can direct your listeners to relevant sources if they want to learn more. I will grade this
for its consistency with your podcast and the cleanness of the writing.
6. Final cut (50%) – Turn in the 20-minute recording of your podcast. I will grade this based
on the following elements:
• Thesis – Does your podcast make a clear argument?
• Structure – Does your podcast logically construct an argument for your thesis?
Are topics covered in an appropriate order? Do you transition between topics and
segments appropriately?
• Style – Does your podcast effectively present information so it can be absorbed
by your audience of choice? Have you chosen an effective format for your chosen
topic?
• Research – Can you back up the claims your making? Can you direct your
audience to helpful materials if they want to learn more?
