LAPC Mary Shelley Frankenstein The Modern Prometheus Discussion This was the original discussion post that I already responded to:Scholars sometimes use Frankenstein as an argument against scientific technology that creates life forms; others argue that it is not technology itself but the use to which it is put that presents an ethical problem. What do you think is Shelley’s position as the novel ends? What is your position? Please be specific in your discussion — Volume I should be referenced.Respond to this persons discussion giving new ideas and your thoughts. Add one quote from FrankensteinAfter reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, it is learned that the monster isn’t Victor’s creation, but it is Victor himself. Yet another thing that can be learned from reading and that is Mary Shelley’s own stance on technology. Frankenstein was written in 1818 and at the time technology was slowly advancing. The better uses of electricity would come at a later date, but scientists were dipping their toes in the water and testing what they could do with it at the moment. Upon finishing Frankenstein, I believe Shelley’s position on technology is that it can do great things, but it should be regulated as it can create disastrous outcomes. Frankenstein shows this point as Victor creates a living creature, yet his nature leaves it and abandons it, letting the creature run amok. Victor’s behaviour of wanting to do something crazy with science causes trouble, and that is seen with his creation. “So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankenstein — more, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation.” (Ch. 3, pg. 48). Shelley was concerned that with new technology, they may go unchecked and those who are ambitious may bite more that they can chew. Technology can go a long way, but there must be limits to what humans can do. Victor’s own creation shows that it can cause destruction if not properly taken care of. If this is Mary Shelley’s stance on technology, then I must agree. I believe that advancements in technology will take the human race to great lengths, but it must be regulated and checked. Things can and will go wrong and we must do our best to avoid those problems. Technology is a wonderful thing and advancements in it make it even better, but letting them go too far causes problems for everyone. If technology does end up going too far, then there must be regulations for it to make sure it isn’t abused and can be properly disposed of.
