Short Essay Grading Criteria: 45%     Content: Content is the most important aspect of your essay. Make sure that you clearly define the central purpose or goal of your essay towards the beginning, either in the first paragraph or shortly after. Your essay should incorporate background information and the body of the essay should in some way refer back to the central purpose of your essay. The conclusion will normally include a summary of what you have said throughout your essay and can also introduce a new idea that you did not have time to discuss in the body. Adherence to the word count will also form part of the content portion of your grade (600-800 words). Please use the format below when writing your essay: Name, date, course in upper corner of first page 12 pt font Double-spaced Times New Roman, Arial, Garamond, or Cambria font styles only 1-inch margins on all sides Page numbers on bottom right corner 30%     Research: This aspect of your grade will focus on how well-researched your short essay is. This includes incorporating academic sources, citations (either in-text citations or footnotes), and a bibliography. All essays must include a bibliography at the end. Although I do not require students to adhere to a specific format, all citations must include the author’s name, the title of the book or article, title of journal for all journal articles, the date and location of publication, and a link if the source is a web article. The essay should incorporate 2-3 academic sources. Academic sources include those found through the PSU library or Google Scholar. I also suggest having someone else read it if possible. While Grammar/Spelling only forms a small part of your grade, if your sentences are unclear or do not make sense due to severe spelling or grammatical issues, this will ultimately have an impact on the content. 10%    Images: Your essay must include images of all works of art you discuss within it. A list of illustrations should be included at the end of your essay, just before the bibliography. All images in your list of illustrations must be captioned and should include the figure number, the artist’s name, title (in italics), and date. Figure numbers should also be included in the body of the essay at the end of the sentence when you first mention a work of art you are discussing, as discussed during our writing workshop.  Image caption sample: Fig. 3 Joseph Beuys, How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare, 1965. 5%      Title: Every essay must have a title, which can either be creative or simple.
