REQUIRED READINGS
Preece, J., Rogers, Y., & Sharp, H. (2015). Interaction design: Beyond human-computer interaction (4th ed). Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons.
Chapter 4, “Social Interaction”
Social Interaction: What is meant by social interaction? In this chapter we will explore how social media has changed the way we have social interactions in our lives. You will be able to list and identify sharable technologies including some familiarity with some of the studies that identify how we can facilitate collaboration.

Chapter 5, “Emotional Interaction”
Emotional Interaction: Can we use technology to change people’s attitudes and emotions? In this chapter, we will learn about automatic emotion recognition and emotional technologies. You will then have the opportunity to critique the persuasive impact of an online agent on customers. Understanding the impact will allow you to apply these concepts to your own interaction design.

Chapter 6, “Interfaces”
Interfaces: There are many different kinds of interfaces. In this chapter, you will consider what the best interface might be for a given application or activity. You will be able to present differences between graphical (GUIs) and natural user interfaces (NUIs).

REQUIRED MEDIA
Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2010). Interface Chronicles: Aftershock. Baltimore, MD: Author.
Interface Chronicles: Aftershock is an interactive first-person game where you, acting as an HCI expert in the distant future, help an elite group of scientists identify and correct potentially life-altering HCI design flaws. There are four levels to this game. You will need to complete each level and record the access code given at the end of each in order to move on to the next level.

Narration: Binoo
My name is Binoo. I’m one of the chief
interfacers here at the lab.
As you’ve probably heard, we’re
experiencing a high-stakes UI issue within
our network; thankfully not here on Earth.
This lab’s primary function is to study the
effects of long-term climate change, and
prepare future generations for adjustment.
One of our systems has experienced a
failure based on human-computer
interaction.
We contacted you specifically, since you’re
the leading expert on this type of issue.
Everyone is grateful for your help,
especially on such short notice.
I’m not sure what you’ve heard about this
mission.
Choices:
Where are you sending me?
I’m not an expert in HCI. You must be
mistaken.
Who am I? Why am I here?

I’m sorry. At this point the details of the
mission are highly classified. Your ship
will deploy momentarily. When you arrive,
you’ll meet with a team that will be able to
fill you in on more of the details.
I’m surrounded by a bit of hubris here, so
your modesty is refreshing, but I’ve spent a
lot of time looking at your file. I’m well

aware of your qualifications!
Narration: Binoo
Choice: Who am I? Why am I here?
We haven’t had anyone around here with
your sense of humor in quite some time.
I’m glad to have you on this mission.

I can assure you that the outcome of this
mission reaches further than you might
imagine. Again, I apologize that I can’t tell
you more right now, but… well, in the
absence of bureaucracy, chaos reigns
supreme.
At least, I think that’s the saying.
We’re short on time; we need to settle a
few business matters before you launch. To
begin, we need to establish your identity
within the lab’s network. You can do that
at the station behind me.
Then, you need to suit up with the proper
equipment. You can get that in the Gear
Room.
Finally, go to the Deployment Platform for
launch. Each interfacer and technician will
be launching separately, so you’ll have to
rendezvous when you land.
Further instructions will be declassified at
that time. Good luck. We’re all counting on
you.

It’s about time you got here; I assume
you’re the new HCI expert. Binoo already
put in a request for your equipment, so let’s
get you geared up.

Let’s see, you are to equip the following:
one R-Class Protective Suit and one I-Class
Helmet.
Well go on, get your stuff; I don’t have all
day.
User clicks on Protective Vest.
This suit will protect you from all types of
elements, but specifically radiation. Not
sure why an HCI expert would need one,
though!
User clicks on Helmet.
Okay, here’s the skinny on the helmet. The
visor will locate any other users within
range and allow you to communicate with
them via a heads-up display.
When any such communication
is available, the visor will automatically
alert you.
The visor also has several menu options.
The LIVE CAPTURES is where you can
find a recorded timeline of your events.
The UX NOTES is where all usability
notes will be stored.
The DATA JACKS is where all data jacks

Long ago, a group of elite scientists created a
network of satellites capable of generating an

eventually made the world uninhabitable. It
functioned for many years without problems,
until a mechanical failure caused a

Usability flaws observed
Central Security protocol used an artificial
biometric device scanner that looked
almost identical to a biometric scanner to
read a fingerprint.
User injury occurred from incorrect usage
of scanner.
Med lockers had insufficient lighting
levels.
The med locker terminal used icons
without any supporting descriptions of their
function and did not follow logical
expectations.
Simplified command options for power
restoration lacked clarification and
provided misleading navigation.
Several options led to harmful events
without warning.

Planning for such a catastrophe, the scientists
