Is it Art or Exploitation? Essay This is the final Critical Thinking Essay. Again this week, your approach (and format) are somewhat different from the model. Please open the attached and follow all instructions carefully.(in the files) Critical Thinking Exercise #3:
For your final Critical Thinking assignment, I’d like you to explore the life and work of
controversial photographer Sally Mann and answer the question: “Is it Art or
Exploitation?” as some of her biggest supporters and critics have contested.
In many ways, this too is a hybrid of a Visual Literacy Exercise and a Critical Thinking
Essay. (See Weekly Sequence for due date.)
Please follow this three-step assignment as outlined here:
Step One: Begin by reading the on-line article below. I would also encourage you to go
to YouTube and watch various clips where Sally Mann is interviewed and talks about
her art.

Step Two: Read this NYT article written by Sally Mann herself.

Step Three: Click on the link below and spend some time with her photographs. If you
cannot access this link, go to the Google Images and type in Sally Mann’s name.
