Description
In Soccer in Sun and Shadow’s chapter “Hugo Sánchez”, Eduardo Galeano tells the story of how two Mexican journalists´ lives were saved during the Yugoslavian wars because the combatant was a fan of Real Madrid soccer player Sánchez. In “Let the Games Begin” (The Global Game, 159-165, @BB) the guerrilla leader Sub Comandante Marcos exchanges letters with Massimo Moratti, President of the Milan FC, trying to organize an impossible match between the Zapatista Revolutionary Army and Club Milan in the city of Los Angeles. These two texts are rich in the dark and absurdist sense of humor typically associated with Mexican character and culture –another national style. But both pieces reveal more layers of meaning for a careful reader: What do these texts say about the relationship between National States and international soccer? What do they imply about football understood as a language? And what do they suggest on the interaction between politics and soccer? Read both pieces, take some time to think about them and write the ideas you come with in a solid two page essay (12 points, double space) in which you quote this authors (or any other we have read) to make your point.
