You work in the Accounting unit at the Frito Lay Funyuns plant.  You run into your boss – Swati Pranash, Department Manager – in the break room.  You started working there on the tax team 5 months ago.  You met Ms. Pranash during your final interview but have never had a conversation with her.  Smiling, you walk up to her with your hand extended and introduce yourself.  After some chit-chat about the unseasonably warm weather, she mentions an article she read the previous night which said that 40% of companies were using Instant Messaging for internal communication and up to 90% of employees use IM at work without their managers’ knowledge or authorization.  She continued…

I know my teenaged grandkids use IM but I just don’t see how such a frivolous technology could possibly be used in a way that is beneficial for business.  Also, what about security? You don’t know who could be typing on the other end!  It just seems like a pointless risk to me.  Still, if other companies are finding ways to use it, there might be something of value there.  Hey, send me an email about business use of IM.  You know, why businesses use it, what the challenges are, etc.  Definitely see if you can find anything about IM use in an Accounting context since that would be most relevant to us.  I need it in the next few days since the regional directors are coming doing their quarterly rounds next week and, if I think IM might be useful here, I need to run it by them.  Be sure you include links to the sites you found helpful since I will want to give them a look.  Ok, I need to get back to my desk.  See you later.
