HUM 1020 Indian River Community College Truth as Goodness Essay Truth as Goodness
Aristotle made a distinction between instrumental goods and intrinsic goods.
Instrumental goods are those goods that aren’t necessarily good in and of themselves. Rather, they are only good insofar as they bring about something that we desire. For example, doing crunches -for most of us- is not good in and of itself. Doing crunches is only good insofar as it brings about something that we desire. Otherwise, most of us wouldn’t bother doing crunches.
Intrinsic goods, on the other hand, ARE good in and of themselves. For example, being front row at your all-time favorite band’s concert is an intrinsic good because it doesn’t get us anything…It’s just good in and of itself!
– So, the ticket you used to enter the concert is aninstrumental good, but the concert experience itself is an intrinsic good.
– The money with which you purchased the ticket is an instrumental good, but the memories you made at the concert are intrinsic goods.
Here’s the discussion prompt: How do you define truth? Be very specific. Do you regard truth as an instrumental good or an intrinsic good? Why? Looking for thorough, thoughtful responses
