How did the portrayal of ‘barbarians’ and conquered peoples in Augustan visual art express aspects of Roman triumphal ideology?
The Augustan age, according to the propaganda of the time, was one of easy territorial expansion and prosperity, with the incorporation of many non-Roman population groups into the empire. This essay should discuss the methods chosen by Augustus to link himself and his family with the growth, stability, and future of the empire, by looking at the visual arts in the public sphere in the late first century B.C. and the early first century A.D. It should examine the representation of the ‘other’, either as enemies or as allies and friends who have accepted Roman rule, and it should consider what the propaganda message might have been.
These are the readings that should be use and cite it as in text citation in Harvard referencing style.
