political or economic values are incommensurable–what do we do when two or more important values
conflict?

In the textbook -> Chapter 15: Ethical Pluralism and Absolute Moral Rules
Ethical pluralism holds that there is a plurality of fundamental moral rules. For some pluralists, there is
an absolute moral rile, and for others, there is no single moral absolute. Pluralism based on an absolute
moral principle, ethical monism, discussed to this point. Let’s consider pluralism with no monistic
absolute rule.
You intended to act, this intent is what you seek to do and the collateral consequences perhaps
unintended, yet there are foreseeable harmful consequences you are responsible. What does this mean?
Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) believed in a benevolent sovereign a monarch with absolute power working
for The People. Historical Evidence suggests, except for George Washington (not a monarch and refused
a kingship), this is not a plausible assumption.
Let’s restate pluralism this way: there are several values which may be equally correct and fundamental,
and yet in conflict with each other because they are incommensurable. Incommensurable values overlap
but share no common measure so we are forced to balance our interests. Pluralism cannot provide a
hierarchy of values or declare them all equal, because they overlap or conflict or when operating
together create special circumstances.
The arc of diversity is real; this is ethical pluralism; it’s anthropology, not ethics. The effort to find the
unique feature found in every moral-practice, making each particular practice a moral-practice, is like
trying to find the one single common feature making every activity with this feature a game. Or in this
case the right ethical theory.
Monopoly, football, Buzkashi all have the family resemblance of games, but no one feature makes an
activity a game. Ethics suffers the same problem. As soon we see a useful generalization, it has some
workability but will fail as, a universal that is applicable in every culture, in every period of history. There
is no equivalent to the universality of gravity to a rule or principle in ethics that has universal absolute
applicability. Even gravity has its limits. It is different on the moon.
