HLSS 699 APUS Effect Fusion Centers Have on Quality of Intelligence Discussion Responses should be a minimum of 250 words and include direct questions. You may challenge, support or supplement another student’s answer using the terms, concepts and theories from the required readings. Also, do not be afraid to respectfully disagree where you feel appropriate; as this should be part of your analysis process at this academic level.
Forum posts are graded on timeliness, relevance, knowledge of the weekly readings, and the quality of original ideas. While proper APA is not required, attribution to sources that informed your posting should be included. Refer to the grading rubric for additional details concerning grading criteria.
The topic that I am focusing on is the effect that fusion centers have on the quality of the intelligence that is obtained and collected and the types of strategies that can be employed in order to improve this quality. One technique that I employed in my literature review that produced sources relevant to my topic was the use of keywords when searching through the library databases as a means of locating peer reviewed journal articles that focused on this particular topic (SAGE, 2019). The keywords that I initially used included “intelligence,” “terrorism,” “fusion centers,” and “quality.” This strategy yielded a relatively high number of results, but some results were published many years ago. To further restrict the number of results, I restricted the time frame to include only recent articles that were published within the last five to seven years. Furthermore, as some results were not published in peer reviewed journals, but in newspapers and other similar publications, I further restricted the number of results by clicking on the option to generate only results that were published in peer reviewed articles. Additionally, some of the results that were returned did not apply to the United States, but to other countries, which means that I, then, also restricted the results by geographic region and clicked on the United States, so that I would receive only those results that were relevant to the United States or which were published in the United States. I utilized this same strategy throughout the various databases that I utilized to obtain a sufficient number of sources for my paper and for the literature review. This strategy was systematic, and allowed me to carry out the same procedures and apply them to more than one academic source database, as it allowed me to generate sources that clearly pertained to my topic and which adhered to the other set of criteria that I selected for my literature review.
A source that may prove to be useful to other students in this course is the Purdue University OWL APA website, which has great educational materials on how to write properly in APA format. This site has been very useful for me personally, as it has ensured that my writing adheres to the APA format that is required in this course. This site is easy to use and I can always find what I need as the menu is on the left side of the site and is very user-friendly and easy to navigate. One source of data that I will use in my thesis is the Homeland Security website, which contains quite a lot of information about fusion centers and their relevance in the fight against terrorism. This website also contains vital information on how fusion centers operate, a history of their operations and performance, resources that are available for the use of employees and stakeholders of fusion centers, and the overall strategies that are used as part of their operations and effectiveness (Homeland Security, 2020). As such, this website will likely prove to be a valuable informational source of material that I can incorporate into my resulting thesis.
