HIM 301 Ashford University Week 4 Benefits of EHR Discussion Guidelines: Nursing
Using the Health IT.gov’s Benefits of EHRs (Links to an external site.) web page, pick one of the impacts that EHRs have on the care of patients (e.g. improved care, increased patient participation, improved care coordination, improved diagnostic outcomes, practice efficiencies, or cost savings).Choose two of the standard terminologies related to nursing practice discussed in Chapter 22 of your textbook. In your initial posting to your classmates, discuss how the adoption of these standards supports achieving the specific EHR impact that you chose. In your follow-up posts to classmates examine the differences between the standards that you researched and those discussed by other classmates in different Ashford majors of study.
Initial Post: Your initial post should be a minimum of 350 words. Utilize a minimum of three unique credible or scholarly sources (excluding the textbook or other course provided resources) cited in APA format, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s Citing Withing Your Paper (Links to an external site.) resource. Keep in mind that scholarly sources include peer reviewed articles and non-commercial websites. Review the Library’s Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) tip sheet for more information about sources. Multiple pages from the same scholarly website will be counted as one scholarly source.

EHRs are real-time, patient-centered records that make information available instantly and securely to
authorized users. While an EHR does contain the medical and treatment histories of patients, an EHR
system is built to go beyond standard clinical data collected in a provider’s o ice and can be inclusive
of a broader view of a patient’s care. EHRs can:
Contain a patient’s medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, immunization
dates, allergies, radiology images, and laboratory and test results
Allow access to evidence-based tools that providers can use to make decisions about a
patient’s care
Automate and streamline provider workflow
Impact of EHRs on Care
Our world has been radically transformed by digital technology – smart phones, tablets, and webenabled devices have transformed our daily lives and the way we communicate. Medicine is an
information-rich enterprise.
A greater and more seamless flow of information within a digital health care infrastructure, created
by electronic health records (EHRs), encompasses and leverages digital progress and can transform
the way care is delivered and compensated.
With EHRs, information is available whenever and wherever it is needed.

BETTER DECISIONS AND MORE COORDINATED CARE WITH EHRS
More complete patient information available from EHRs enables providers to make well-informed
care decisions quickly, helping to improve care and reduce safety risks.
