In criminal justice, here in the United States, correction, corrections and correctional are
umbrella terms describing a variety of functions typically carried out by government entities that
involve the punishment, treatment, and supervision of persons that have been convicted of
crimes.
Evaluate past, present, and future trends
The development of the correction system pertains to jurisdiction’s prisons and
community-based programs and probation to punish criminals for the crimes they have
committed. Also, rehabilitate criminals and provide deterrence. These programs do not just assist
adults there are also community-based programs for juveniles. The operation of the correction
system is on different levels, such as jails, prisons, probation, parole, juvenile, and community
corrections. Community-based corrections are community-based programs that are an alternative
for jail or prison. These programs are designed to help people reintegrate back into the
community with a community setting. A trend that always been relevant in the correctional
system in the past, present, and will be in the future is mass incarceration. A present trend is
juveniles in the penitentiary system, and this will also be a future trend if things do not change.
“Since 2000, the number of youths in confinement has fallen by 60%, a trend that shows no sign
of slowing down” (Sawyer, 2019).
Mass incarceration of prison and jails will also be a trend in the future because people
commit a crime every day. Also, there are many confinement facilities in the world but imagine
how many people they are housing. “The American criminal justice system holds almost 2.3
million people in 1,833 state prisons, 110 federal prisons, 1,772 juvenile correctional facilities,
3,134 local jails, 218 immigration detention facilities, and 80 Indian Country jails as well as in

military prisons, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons in the U.S.
territories” (Sawyer & Wagner, 2020). As the future present itself, as things change every
day, as the world began to evolve the trends in the correctional system will change as well.
Examine correctional organization and administration functions that reflect operations
and fiscal demands.
The goals of a correctional organization are retribution, deterrence, incapacitation,
rehabilitation. For the administration of a correctional organization to stay consistent with those
goals they need to make sure that the day-to-day operations are being managed properly and
accordingly and being able to manage this under the fiscal demands faced with. The
administration of a correctional organization begins with the warden who oversees the day-today operations of the state prisons and county jails. Wardens manage the budget and personnel,
procedures that ensure the facility is safe (Hall, n.d.). The correctional system has been reported
to be the fourth largest of states spending after education, Medicaid, and transportation (Vera
Institute of Justice, 2010). For administrations to be able to operate under the fiscal restraints,
there needs to be decisions made as to what changes to the budgets can be made without
deterring from the goals that they are set to accomplish. Correctional administrators need to
make some very critical decision when it comes the daily operations and the fiscal demands it
takes to operate a correctional facility. This include but not limited to personnel, inmate
programs, and training programs for personnel.
Assess the Security, technology, management, and control functions within correctional
environments.
As prison populations continue to rise it is important to keep inmates safe inside the
facility and maintain stability and control outside as well. Security measures such as the prisons

unique design and skillful staff help keep the prison safely operating. When building a prison, it
is essential to have high walls, barbed wire fence, and detection devices. The level of security is
also impacted by the age of the prison, layout and maintenance levels. More innovations are
being created daily to help maintain the heightened security. In 1999 the AVIAN system was
introduced by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This system is valuable because it helps classify,
categorize, and allocate inmates. The physical perimeter is useless without proper trained staff.
Explain the various Educational and treatment programs used in rehabilitation efforts for
institutional and community corrections.
There are many types of programs in the corrections facilities and many are effective.
The areas that needed to be addressed or offered an inmate rehabilitation are drug and alcohol
treatment, sexual treatment, counseling, and educational assessment, the needs for assessment
and self-help programs. But some who have been placed in the Penal institution that had never
had a problem with alcohol or illegal drugs. Even hardcore offenders do enter the drug
problems, some of their charges were related to fulfilling the desire to use drugs, every inmate
must take a test to see if they are taking any drugs. Inmates are introduced to the rehab, because
some aren’t uncontrolled in an environment. As part of the rehab process, is the Psychology
department, the Psychology programs are designed to address of inmate needs from drug abuse
treatment to anger management.
Programs needed to be evaluated and re-evaluated for effectiveness, and the offenders
must be tracked and to follow up when they are released back into society. The follow up will
give up corrections department a wonderful idea of how rehabilitative services that are effective.
(Drug and Alcohol Services and Information, 2002).
