Grand Canyon University Concept of Health Has Evolved Dramatically Commentaries The concept of health has evolved dramatically over time. Initially, the idea of health was primarily centered around being free from disease. In the 17th century, the industrial revolution began to flourish and caused people to migrate from rural areas to cities, in hopes of making a better life for themselves. This unexpected surge of people caused cities to become grossly overcrowded and unsanitary, therefore, creating a haven for illnesses and plagues. It was not until the 18th century, that health, hygiene, and the transmission of disease became a concern to the government (Whitney, 2018). This marks the time when healthcare within communities was born. Revolutionary women like Florence Nightingale became well-known and admired for her contributions to improving sanitation measures. The development of her Environmental Theory was centered around three main pillars: health promotion, disease prevention, and risk reduction (Whitney, 2018). Diseases became more manageable once sanitation measures were improved and introduced. Thus, changing the focus from management to prevention. In the United States and worldwide, health promotion has changed over time as leaders have switched their focus on the different aspects of health management, prevention, and promotion. According to the World Health Organization (2019), their core mission is to promote health, alongside keeping the world safe and serving the vulnerable. Beyond fighting disease, they work to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. In addition, federal agencies, such as the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, have partnered with states to address public health and provide hospital funding to meet the growing needs of health promotion within the United States (Falkner, 2018). Federal programs for health, like Healthy People 2020, identifies the nations current health concerns and formulates action plans to improve goal related outcomes based on wellness and overall well-being (Office of Disease Prevention and Heath Promotion, 2014).According to Stephens (2013), implementing health promotion interventions based on evidence-based practice provides nurses with effective, safe, and efficient care. Evidence-based practices incorporates research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to provide an effective course of action for care delivery and health promotion. Therefore, health promotion strategies, and goals should be comprised of evidence-based practices to promote safe, quality patient care in our rapidly changing healthcare environment.
