Grand Canyon To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee Annotated Bibliography Attached are actually two assignments. One is for you to do an annotated bibliography for the resources used for the paper. The other assignment is the actual paper. Please look over the directions carefully. If you have any questions, please let me know. Options for Your American Literature Final Research Project
Guidelines:
Research paper (750-1250 words); double spaced, Times New Roman font, 1” margins, MLA formatted
with in-text citations and works cited page with the text you evaluate (primary source) and at least one
outside source from Galileo (secondary source). Automatically dropped to an 80 for failure to format
according to MLA guidelines.
1. Exploring literary themes. Write an essay that explores one of the dominant literary themes addressed in
American Literature (innocence/loss of innocence, tradition, salvation, industrialism/technology, and
identity) and how that theme is exemplified in one or multiple texts from our reading list. There is a
separate document listing possible themes in the research paper folder. There are a few ways to work
with this prompt:
a. Option 1. Center your essay on one theme within a particular literary period. For example, you
could explore the theme of the American Dream in early Puritan writers or disillusionment in
20th century writers.
b. Option 2. You could also compare how a theme is explored in one literary period versus another
period. For instance, you might look at loss of innocence in Romanticism as compared to loss of
innocence in Postmodernism to show how the theme is evident in similar or different ways in
each period. Texts from each literary movement would be brought in to provide context and
evidence. You would need to examine at least one text from each chosen period, and you would
also bring in outside sources from other critics who have explored the same theme.
c. Option 3. Finally, you might use this essay as an opportunity to compare how one theme – like
industrialism – works in poetry versus how that same theme works in the short story form
within a given literary period. For example, you might look at industrialism in Modern poetry
vs. industrialism in Modern fiction. Once again, you need support from our texts, as well as
support from outside sources.
2. Expanding your reading list. This prompt allows students to explore a novel. The choices below include
the influential American texts To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, or The Scarlet Letter.
To Kill a Mockingbird
Take one or more of the forms of discrimination in To Kill a Mockingbird and write an analytic essay in
which you explain the forms and, if applicable, compare and contrast the types of discrimination. You
should argue whether the lessons about discrimination that Scout learns are applicable to all types of
prejudice, or whether they apply to racism alone. The most obvious form of discrimination in To Kill a
Mockingbird is racism; however, there are other types of prejudice and discrimination that typify
relationships among the novel’s characters. Scout, for example, is ridiculed in To Kill a Mockingbird
because she is a tomboy. Boo Radley is ostracized despite the fact that hardly anyone knows him. Reverse
racism is also present in the novel, as evidenced by the threats against Atticus Finch and his family as he
defends Tom Robinson.
The Scarlet Letter
Focus on character development throughout the novel on one particular character of interest, The Scarlet
Letter: o Pearl – relationship with nature, intuition, supernatural, evil incarnate o Hester – defined by the
scarlet letter, changes, sin, atonement o Chillingworth – tragic figure, changes, obsession, sin o Dimmesdale
– religion, purity, respect, changes, tragic hero
The Great Gatsby
Write an essay analyzing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald writes at a time that was
various called the Lost Generation and the Roaring Twenties. He features that kind of radical lifestyle
change as it’s lived out by different classes of people. Focusing on the interplay of class and gender among
the different romantic couples in the novel
Annotated Bibliography Assignment
Completing this assignment will demonstrate your understanding of MLA citations, research,
and evaluating critical articles. It will also show that you have chosen a research paper topic,
have started your research, and have more than one option for your secondary source.
View the research paper assignment sheet. Once you have chosen your topic, begin searching for
related articles in Galileo. Choose two to read and summarize. You will provide the full works
cited entry for each (provided by Galileo) and beneath it, write a paragraph of 100-200 words
summarizing the article’s main ideas.
Example:
Harris, Trudier. The Scary Mason-Dixon Line: African American Writers and The South. Baton
Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2009.
Harris argues that all African Americans must confront the history of the South, as a rite
of passage. This is particularly true for writers, who must consider both the South’s literary
tradition and the tradition of slave narratives. Discussion of the South’s history can include but is
not limited to violence on Southern soil, return to the South, a move away from the south or
triumph over the South and its racist history. Both Southern and non-Southern black writers are
discussed, with Octavia Butler being among the non-Southern authors addressed. Themes
discussed for both groups of writers include fear of transplanted racism and African American
folk culture.
