Graham Kapowsin High School Biology Biodiversity Threats Report Remember this is a high school assignment so don’t make it complicated…. follow the instructions below:
We are going to spend the week working on this project and it will serve as your “quiz” for Module 5. I want to give you a chance to do some research, learn about one of the major threats to biodiversity, be creative, and teach your classmates what you’ve learned. The instructions for this assignment are below, but it essentially consists of you creating a poster/infographic, sharing it here, and then commenting on three other posts. Read below for detailed instructions.
The one I have chosen is Climate change
increase in global temperatures (so that is the one to write about, ignore all the other options from list below)
What are the major threats to biodiversity?
If you look around online and in your textbook, there are quite a few major threats to biodiversity, such as:
Climate change
increase in global temperatures
rising sea levels
changes to ocean circulation patterns
glacial retreat
stronger, more destructive storms
Habitat loss
Destruction of habitats
Disruption of habitats
Habitat fragmentation
Edge effects
Pollution
Water
Air
Land
Depletion of ozone layer
Invasive Species
Overexploitation
Over-harvesting species
Over-harvesting natural resources
Other Threats
Diseases (such as Ebola, infectious bursal disease, and the flu) which can affect wildlife
Drying up of wetlands and soils
What are the steps in completing this project?
Pick one of the major threats listed above (highlighted in yellow) that you would like to research.
Send me an email with the threat you’ve chosen (sdyer@bethelsd.org)
Note: It is okay for more than one student to pick the same threat, however if everyone starts to pick the same one.. I may ask some students to pick something different just so we have some variety.
Do some research using your textbook and the internet to find answers to the following questions:
What is the name of this threat?
What is it? What happens?
How does it negatively affect biodiversity / how is it a threat?
Does it affect all ecosystems or just specific ones?
Are there any secondary effects?
For example, stronger Atlantic hurricanes can be costly (expensive damages) and can lead to coastal habitat loss
What are some real-world examples of this taking place and affecting ecosystems?
Are there solutions or technology to fix and/or avoid this threat?
Could this threat affect your community here in Washington?
Using Notability, design an infographic to teach about what you learned.
Give your infographic a title (1 pt)
Compile all of your research into AT LEAST eight, well-written, concise, complete sentences. This can be bullet points or a paragraph. (16 pts)
Include at least 1 photo relevant to the threat you chose and give it a caption (1 pt).
Cite your sources (MINIMUM OF 3 SOURCES (not including the textbook or BioExplorer) (informal citation is NOT needed, but at least list the website address (to the exact page you got the info from)) and/or the name of the textbook). (3 pts)
This is a good source to start with.
Make sure the infographic is neat, clean, easy to read (consider typing instead of writing with a stylus), and attractive in layout and design (6 pts)
Export your infographic as a PDF and upload it to the discussion board here.
When you tap “Reply”, it will give you the option to attach a file.
Just tap the “attach” button, on the right, just below the text box.
Attach your PDF file/infographic.
Type the name of your threat in the text box (so others know what it is).
Tap the “Post Reply” button.
Read through other infographics and respond to at least 3 stating what you learned (3pts)
You must respond to 3 different people.
Your response does not need to be more than one sentence long.
State what you learned. It cannot be the same fact/info from your own project.
Come back and review these instructions as often as needed.
What are some tips I should keep in mind as I work?
Write down research/facts as you find them.
Keep a running list of sources that you use. I like to save these links in a google doc or just email them to myself so I can copy and paste them later.
You want to use the name of your threat in your google search, but you can add the following terms:
“threat to biodiversity”
“wildlife conservation”
“conservation biology”
“effects to ecosystems”
“damage to environments”
PROOF READ what you wrote! It is so important to do this. You want your infographic to be a good reflection of your hard work and to showcase your research. It can’t do this if people cannot read it or understand what it says.
