READING RESPONSE MINI-PAPER WHAT TO READ: Read these three chapters: • Gorin & Moniz – Health and mental health policy, (handout) • Reisch (2013). U.S. social policy and social welfare: A historical overview. (handout) • Warde textbook, Chapter 2: A brief historical overview of social policy development in the U.S. These are not new assignments; they were already in the syllabus as required readings. WHAT TO WRITE: Write a very brief (two-three-page) response to the readings. There is no need to write an introduction and conclusion for this mini paper. You will not be graded on technical writing. This mini paper should have two sections (with headings): Synthesis and Present-Day Connections.
Synthesis: The first half should be a synthesis describing the key points from the three readings. (Do not summarize the three chapters separately; instead, synthesize them together.) Present-Day Connections: The second half of the paper should focus on several of the historical programs or policies that are addressed in the assigned readings and make connections between them and modern-day programs or policies. GRADING CRITERIA: The Reading Response is worth a maximum of eight points. Your grade is based on: • Following the instructions outlined above • Demonstrating through your comments engaged in critical thinking to make connections • Offering thoughtful reflections, and articulating comments or questions that are thoughtful and engaged
