You are each responsible for 3 current events writing assignments over the course of the semester. For each paper you are to find a current news article that relates to a topic covered in class. This means that it must be a topic relevant to Global Issues, not an issue that only applies to domestic politics. Also, you may not select a specific issue that has been discussed extensively in class. If you have questions or concerns about your topic, please see me at least 48 hours prior to the due date. Write one page, single spaced times new roman 12 point font, and standard margins. The paper should:
1. Describe the issue. What is the source of the problem or conflict? The reader should understand the key points without reading the original article.
2. Discuss how the issue relates a class topic such as realism, liberalism, conflict and security, terrorism, genocide, international organizations, etc.
a. Explain this in detail. Do not assume the reader has any knowledge of the topic.
3. The main part of this assignment if your analysis of the chosen issue and the primary question is “so what”? In other words, why does this issue matter? In what ways does this issue/event impact your life? How do actions in your life contribute to the problem or resolution? What is the significance and importance for international politics? In addition, what is your opinion on the issue and why? What should be done? You may take any position, but it must be well supported with factual evidence and/or strong theoretical support based theories, concepts, and knowledge presented in class, or though research using credible (academic) sources.
4. Each paper must cite two news sources, one from each of the columns (right and left) listed below.
New York Times Washington Times
Washington Post Wall Street Journal
LA Times The Economist
Al Jazeera Reuters
BBC The Hill
Politico Christian Science Monitor
NPR Bloomberg
NBC Associated Press
ABC CBS
5. Your paper must include a works cited page and a copy of the rubric (located on Blackboard) must be attached. All pages of your paper must be stapled.
6. You must submit your paper as a hard copy in class and submitted on Blackboard, where it will be checked for plagiarism.
