Class Agenda
5-26-20
1. Feedback on first presentation
a. Excellent management of the digital space
i.
With only a couple of minor exceptions, your flow from presenter to
presenter worked well
ii.
You adapted when necessary to share video via chat
b. More class interaction needed
i.
Asking “are there any questions or comments” often fails to elicit
interaction (take it from me after 25 years of teaching!)
ii.
Consider structuring interactions by providing a prompt, giving students
a couple of minutes to think and write, then calling on people or asking
for volunteers
c. Make sure you include a significant case study not in the text. This group
mentioned the Smith case in addition to the Ghostnet and Olympic Games
examples from the text.
d. Be sure to include clear and relevant references to the broad ethical theories
foundational for the course.
e. Though the lesson plan is an outline only, it should include specific details,
concepts covered, and links
f. Kudos to our first presenters – that was a daunting task and you pulled it off
wonderfully.
2. Feedback on writings
a. Introductions: I am asking you to write an introduction in your reading response
that works for any reader who is not familiar with the assignment. In other
words, write as if you are writing about the topic rather than about Tavani.
b. A person should be able to read your response and not necessarily be in our
class to know the specific assignment you are working on.
3. Review of last class
a. We examined computer security on several different levels of analysis.
b. We looked at the concept of privacy as it applies to computer networks.
i.
In the Smith v Maryland case, the issue was whether the phone register
installed by the phone company violated the 4th amendment protections
against unreasonable searches. Do you agree with the ruling? Why or
why not?
ii.
What about the Apple case we discussed? Do you think that the
company is justified in refusing to build a “backdoor” into their phone
security system to protect users even when law enforcement might have
a justifiable reason to want to break into a criminal’s phone?
4.
5.
6.
7.
c. We talked about the ethics of hacking.
i.
Is there such a thing as an “ethical hacker”?
d. We explored cyberterrorism.
e. We speculated on the future of cybersecurity.
