What is its income level (low; low/middle; upper/middle; high)? To find a country’s designated income level by the World Bank so you can compare trends (see below, questions), please see “Countries by income level” under “Country Profile Guidance” under “Assignments Overview” on Blackboard. What’s the total population? What percentage/how many are aged 65 and above? What percentage/how many are aged younger than 15? What percentage of the working population are dependent people? What is your country’s unemployment rate? Among men? Among women? What is the male and female labor force participation rate? Explain how the distribution of the age of the population and its employment may have an impact on supporting NCD and emerging health issues prevention programs and programs for the elderly? What percent of the total population is urban and rural? How will this percent have an impact on supporting NCD and emerging health issues in your country?Literacy rate among women? What is the legal status of girls’ education in your country? How will this impact on the health of the country’s population? What is the legal status of early marriage? What is legally the earliest age a young woman can get married? How will this impact on the health of the country’s population? What is your civil liberties index? What is your government effectiveness index? How stable or fragile is your country in the context of political transitions/elections, civil unrest, economic/market dynamics, outbreaks, famines, internal migrations, etc.? What percentage of the GDP is spent on the military? Please describe what is going on in your country that could impact on the quality and quantity of health services being provided, and impact on the health status of your population? If possible, find out what “score” your country receives in stability/fragility and why. How diverse is your country with regards to ethnic groups, religions, languages, indigenous populations? What is the mobile phone subscriber per 100 people? What is the mobile network coverage in your country? How would the answers on the diversity of your country and the mobile phone use impact your mass media and advocacy activities? What’s the total Gross Domestic Product of your country? This assignment, worth 100 points, is to be uploaded on Blackboard and is due by 4:30pm,
Monday, May 4, the last class of the course.
Without a prior excused absence or emergency, any paper submitted after class on May 4 will
receive no more than 70% credit. Any assignment submitted on May 5 will receive no more than
50% credit. Any assignment submitted on May 6 will receive no more than 25% credit. No credit
will be given after May 7.
The goal of this paper is convey to a reader (a potential donor or a potential NGO) a very clear
and comprehensive understanding of some of your country’s health issues, the global burden of
disease in your country, their risk factors and determinants, how the country is addressing those
issues through prevention, screening and diagnosis, management and treatment plans and
programs, and what evidence they have of success. The country you pick should be in the low,
lower middle, or upper middle-income category (see World Bank: Countries by income (2019)
file under Blackboard’s Assignments, Country Profile Guidance). Your country profile should be
about the diseases and emerging global issues covered by this course.
Be proud of the country you chose and make your profile thoughtful and thorough and creative
for your reader.
Please start answering the questions in this profile over the next two months. If you have
any questions or concerns, please e-mail me or set up a meeting before or after class with me on
Mondays.
There is no page or word limitation. Layout and formatting are up to you, but font size should be
around a readable 12 point (except for in-text citations under tables, maps, graphics, charts, etc.
which can be smaller, but readable). Margins should be 1 inch. Please number your pages.
Just present your answers in an organized, compelling, creative and clear way, using tables,
charts, maps, graphics, photos, and clear narrative where appropriate. Always cite photos and
graphs/graphics (no need to cite obvious clip art). Use headings and delineate sections and
paragraphs to make the narrative more easily read. Use in-text citation as needed for data and for
quotes. This profile should be in your voice; paraphrase the information you are getting and use
quotes sparingly. Use bullet points only when you are making a list. Do not substitute prose with
bullet points.
You can put whatever designs or photos you want on the cover page to make it more personable.
Five points will be taken off the paper if there is no cover page or if the information is not
correct or not clear.
SOME SOURCES TO CONSIDER:
1
For each section of your profile, I have recommended websites for you to gather data from (see
Blackboard’s Assignments, Country Profile Guidance, for a list). To do a complete, thoughtful
and thorough effort, however, you will need to visit many more sites, especially for program
information.
Try these additional resources:
WHO, USAID, UNICEF, CDC, World Bank
Your Ministry of Health. Chances are they may have a website and reports/data on them, or
search engine in them to get more information on their programs and plans and evidence of their
successes (or failures).
Your country’s health sector strategic plans. These have at least the plan of action your country is
committing to–while they may not exactly be current activities, they do give you a sense of what
they are going to be doing.
Foreign bilateral aid (donors) reports: USAID, DFID (UK) Development tracker, SIDA
(Sweden), Irish Aid, GIZ (Germany). NGOs, like PATH, Project Hope, Save the Children,
CARE, country-based NGOs, etc. Try their internal search engines also.
Dig deeper, think harder, look further. You may also find yourself looking in technical
reports, peer reviewed journal articles (like Lancet), mainstream press articles, agency websites,
and program briefs for answers to the program questions. These are all good sources. Just cite
them properly.
GRADING
Grading will be based as follows:
• Substance: 50 points will be for completion, detail and clarity of answers and the
narrative descriptions.
• Appearance: 15 points will be for the organization of the paper (clarity of
layout/formatting) and its overall appeal/creativity/attractiveness. Please copy/paste
maps, charts, photos, graphics, and tables when appropriate and as they add to clarity of
information. Remember to label them and cite their source. Be creative.
• 5 points will be for using high quality sources and having correctly formatted (APA style)
citations and references. Please note that I will also check several of your citations or
references to make sure I can find the information you have cited. If there are no APA
references on separate pages at the end of your paper, 5 points will be deducted. One
point will be deducted for every incorrect reference (meaning missing hanging indents,
missing “retrieved from” before URLS, and other errors, but only a maximum of 5 points
will be deducted for those.
To receive full points for substance and appearance, answers should be in your own words;
questions should be as completely and honestly answered as possible; spelling, grammar and
punctuation should be correct; and your paper should be creative, clear and appealing in its
appearance and how it presents information and data.

GLOBAL BURDEN OF DISEASE PROFILE OF YOUR COUNTRY
Use this website– https://vizhub.healthdata.org/gbd-compare/ and other sources on the internet
to gather data from your country to answer the following questions:
1. Use the single, treemap (see left side bar), cause buttons to identify GBDs and data.
2. Create as many tables as you need to insert your data from the GBD webpage, as follows:
a. Name the top 5 diseases that cause the highest amount of death in your country
for all people? Name the top 5 diseases that cause the highest amount of DALYs
in your country for all people? These 5 diseases must be diseases covered in this
course. How do the mortality and DALY data differ? Why?
5
b. Name the top 5 diseases that cause the highest amount of death and of DALYs for
men (boys) and for women (girls) by the following age groups:
i. Under 5
ii. 5-15
iii. 15-49 (these 5 diseases must be diseases covered in this course)
iv. 50-69 (these 5 diseases must be diseases covered in this course)
v. 70 and above (these 5 diseases must be diseases covered in this course)
c. What are your findings as to how similar and different men and women are in
mortality and DALYs within the 15-49 age group? Within the 50-69 age group?
How would you design your prevention programs to accommodate the
differences, if any?
d. What are your findings to how similar and different men and women are in
mortality and DALYs between the 15-49 age group and the 50-69 age group?
3. Compare your top 5 diseases in terms of DALYs to the top 5 diseases in your country’s
income level, and to a high-income country. Use this website’s “compare” function and
compare your country’s GBDs with the GBDs of the income levels (SDIs) (under
“location” function) which your country is in and with the high-income country level. What
are your findings? What are the differences? Similarities? Why?
For the next section on risk factors, pick the top 5 diseases for all people in the 15-49 age
group. These five diseases should be diseases and emerging health issues that this course
covers.
RISK FACTORS IN YOUR COUNTRY
Use this website– https://www.who.int/nmh/countries/en/ and if need be
http://www.ncdrisc.org/country-profile.html and other sources on the internet to gather data from
your country to answer the following questions and populate the table (see example, below):
1. What is the prevalence of each of the following nine risk factors in your country? List
them from highest to lowest by rows.
2. Under columns, label the columns by the five diseases (from highest GBD (#1) to lowest
(#5)). These five diseases are from the burdens of disease you listed for all men and
women in the 15-49 age group, above. Under the Diseases, just place Xs or checkmarks if
they are predicted by any risk factor. See example below (order of risk factors and
diseases will vary by country):

Compare any four of these risk factors to another country’s risk factors in your WHO region, and
to one high income country (your choice). What are your findings? Why do you think there are
differences? Similarities?
PREVENTION, SCREENING AND DIAGNOSIS, MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT
PLANS AND PROGRAMS
For each of the five leading global burdens of disease you’ve identified and for at least two other
emerging health issues (that are covered by this course), describe in detail the following:
1. What are the two other emerging diseases you’ve chosen and why did you pick them?
What is their global burden of disease for mortality and DALYs and their prevalence in
your country?
2. Visit your country’s government website or other websites to find information on its
current or most recent plans of action with regards to each of the five global burdens of
diseases and two other emerging health issues you’ve picked. What are its goals, outcome
expectations and timelines for each?
3. Use the NCD Alliance website and this atlas:
https://ncdalliance.org/sites/default/files/resource_files/NCDAtlas_WEB.pdf — and other
sources on the internet (e.g. CORE Group) to gather data from your country to describe
in some detail a total of 1-2 NGO (non-governmental) and 1-2 government programs that
are involved in prevention, screening and diagnosis, management and treatment of these
diseases and issues, and what evidence they have of success. Be specific in terms of the
organization, the program’s name and major donor, its target population and geography
(if not national, try to find a map that indicates coverage), strategies, activities, and
7
output, outcome, and impact data if available. Describe them using the categories of mass
media, advocacy, health services, community activities, family and individual activities.
SUMMARY
1. What are the key messages (at least three per item, below) you want your reader to “take
away” with them?
a. About your country’s general profile—how diverse its population is, how
resource-ful it may be, how focused it may be on health care, how challenged it
may be.
b. About the 5 major diseases and 2 emerging health issues your country is faced
with, and the risk factors that are contributing to them. What are the major killer
diseases that follow your country’s children (boys and girls) from birth through
old age through each of the major age levels? How do they differ between boys
and girls? How would you plan your health programs to accommodate those
differences?
c. About your country’s ability to fund, design and carry out health prevention,
screening and diagnosis, management and treatment programs for those 5 major
diseases and 2 emerging health issues.
