Essay Length: 1000-1100 words, excluding quotations and references (approx. 3.5-4 pages,
double-spaced, 12pt font, standard margins)
Due Date: Tuesday, June 18, 2019. As indicated on the syllabus, essays are to be submitted in
person at the beginning of class. An online copy must also be submitted (before 12pm June 18)
to the Essay #2 file on Brightspace so that it can be checked via Urkund.
Assignment Description:
Choose one of the following topics on which to write:
1) Choose a poem (either from The Broadview Introduction to Literature or another one you
enjoy) and compare and contrast its form, theme, and one other concept we have
studied in class with one of the poems on the course syllabus. Include your chosen poem
at the beginning of your essay. How does each poem employ formal elements to develop
their distinctive ideas?
2) Ideas of freedom and gender have been important in a number of the texts we have read
in the course. How does Nimona explore these themes? How does Stevenson use
images to visually communicate them?
3) In “A Father’s Faith,” Mariam Toews writes about the very difficult subject of her father’s
mental illness. How does she conceptualize the idea of faith for him? How does she
employ the form of literary non-fiction to develop his sense of community?
4) Choose a digital story (a visual novel, interactive fiction, hypertext, Twitter story, etc.),
and consider how the digital medium shapes the story. Also discuss how reader
interaction and participation influences the storytelling. If you choose this topic, e-mail
me or meet with me to discuss your ideas before the essay due date.
IMPORTANT:
Your analysis should employ 1-2 of the terms and concepts (i.e. characterization, setting, theme,
narrator, point of view, frame narrative, genre, autobiography, etc.) we have studied in the
course.
References: Your essay should include references from 1-2 additional sources. These must be
ACADEMIC sources or credible ones (no Wikipedia or blog posts, etc.).

Structure: Your essay should be correctly formatted, and appropriately structured, and well
organized with a brief introduction containing a thesis statement that tells your reader what your
argument is, a main body that proves that argument through analysis of the texts you are looking
at, and finally a brief conclusion.
Note: Because the assignment is so brief, you will not be able to analyze every aspect; instead, you
should focus on the one or two points that you see as the most central or most generative for the
type of analysis you are writing.
