Florida State University Group Planning and Why Is Necessary Presentation Students will plan for an eight week group and put the information into a PowerPoint.
What kind of group is this? State population and problem.
Is it a closed or open group? Mandated or voluntary? Provide a rationale for your answers.
What was your overall goal of this group?
Give a rationale for the need of this group. In other words, why is this group important for this population? Support your claims with at least five journal articles. Make sure that these are journal articles and not the class text or a web-based article. Your reference page should include 10 articles/books but you need only to discuss the five most important ones in the presentation.
If you were really planning for this group, give topics/activities for each of the eight weeks of this group. How do these topics fit in with your overall goal?
Attached is a example of the powerpoint/rubric and background of the assignment.

Cover page
Name of group: Example: Online instructor support group
Why do we need a online instructor support
group? This is the question to ask yourself about
the type of group you think is important.
• What kind of group is this? In this section discuss why you think that
your group is necessary. Who is the population to be served and what
is the problem this population is experiencing?
• In order to answer this question, first research the population and
problem. For my group that I would research online MSW programs
and problems that instructors have teaching online.
• Remember to cite your references in the body of your text and
include a reference page.
• Have at least five of the best sources that you incorporate into this
assignment but include 10 in your reference page.
What is my overall goal for this group?
• My overall goal, for all of the eight weeks of my group, is to offer
support to instructors who teach online courses. I want the group
members to feel like this group is a safe place where they can bring
their concerns without judgment and perhaps hear helpful strategies
from other group members. Research best practices in the literature.
• Is this group open or closed? Justify why you chose an open or closed
group. Is this group mandatory or voluntary? Remember that most
groups that include victims of any kind are usually voluntary.
• Include research.
Group Planning Example
Group #1 Begin to help establish universality and safety. I would do an
ice breaker (name three challenges you have teaching online),
introductions, and develop norms.
Group #2 Have a conversation about strategies that have worked to
make sure students are successful.
• Develop a plan for each group, one for each of the eight groups. Make
sure that each specific goal facilitates the overall goal. You can discuss
an activity that you might do to help forward the specific goal.
Conclusion
• Based on the research, an online instructor support group seems like a
intentional way to help teachers improve their skills when teaching in
this format.
• Include your final thoughts here.
• Your power point will probably have more slides than this example.
Feel free to be creative when developing your slides.
Week 10
Yalom talks about interviewing clients for group therapy in chapter 9,
trying to help the group leader to evaluate if someone is a good
candidate for group therapy. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to
predict behavior, to know for sure how someone will react to what is
happening in a group at any given time. Of course it is always a good
idea to talk with a potential group member ahead of time so they will
know what to expect from being in a group.
Unfortunately, many times social workers do not have the luxury of
pre-screening a client for a group because many times we meet a
group after it has already been formed. As a social worker, we may
be asked to run a pre-existing group for a variety of reasons. We
need to know what to do if we are faced with this situation.
An important thing to do then, is do a mini evaluation of the group
when you are leading it for the first time. Perhaps in that situation you
are new to the group and everyone else has been together for a
while. You can start by asking them what they like about the group,
what has been helpful and what has been unhelpful. You do not want
to ask everyone to tell you about themselves as that would be for
your benefit and not the groups benefit. Instead, give the members an
opportunity to talk about what they have liked/disliked about the
group so far. This will give you important information that will let you
know what has been helpful and not helpful and then you can plan
accordingly.
Another important element is to talk about your style, what you hope
to accomplish in groups and solicit as much information from them as
possible. Make sure as the new person in the group, you ask them
about their group and listen carefully to their answers. You also want
to ask about existing norms and help them to establish them if they
are not in place.
In a group that is closed, meaning that the group accepts no new
members for the pre-determined number of group sessions, it could
be easy to get information about how a group has been because they
have all been in the group for the life of the group.
In an open group, a group that maintains its size by replacing
members when others leave, may prove to be a little more
complicated when you are new to a group as other people may be
new in that very same session. It seems reasonable to do the same
thing that you would do in a closed group. Make sure you take the
time to get to know the likes and dislikes of the group members.
Another important thing that the group leader needs to do is
remember to be the one who can help group members to transfer the
learning from inside the group to action and behaviors outside the
group. In watching the Yalom videos think about Bob for a moment.
Yalom helped him to see the impact that he had on women in the
group to his relationships with women outside the group. He is able to
help Bob transfer what he learned in the in the group to his life
outside by showing him that the women in the group, by their
feedback to him, made them feel that he was cold and uncaring.
Yalom eventually gets Bob to see that he does not want women to
feel that way about him as they may get the wrong impression about
him, one that he does not mean to portray. In other words, to be
helpful, group leaders need to help group members to understand
their impact on others both in and outside of the group.
Remember that our first group we are in is our family and extended
family. Much of our thinking about self and how we relate to others in
later groups can be tied to our family history. There are important
group issues that are related to that first family group. It is always
important to take a look at yourself, your roles in group and to think
about the impact you have on others. Again, impact is different than
intention. We may not mean to, it is not our intention to hurt
someone’s feelings but that is indeed your impact. It is important to
take a look at this for yourself as well as the therapeutic concept.
