Florida State University Bargaining Model of War Paper Submission Formatting Instructions:
Please submit your exam document as word doc (or similar: .doc, .docx, .odf, and .rtf are fine: pdf is not.
Your submission must be double-spaced and must use Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
Use parenthetical citations: using the ideas of other scholars without appropriately crediting them IS plagiarism, and parenthetical citations are the appropriate way to credit others (this is the case for every academic paper you’ll ever write).
Ensure all images are included in your final document: images attached to your submission but not included in the doc will not be graded. If you’re not sure how to do this, make use of Google.
Failure to abide by these instructions will result in grade reductions.

Both states involved in the interaction
The ideal points of both states
The current border
The proposed new border
The bargaining range
(5 pts) Think about the basic model you constructed in question 1. In complete sentences, how would each of the following alter the bargaining range you drew above?
(2 pt.) State A elects a more dovish leader. Define dovish in your answer.
(1 pt.) State B gains an ally (State C) that agrees to aid State B in the fight against State A.
(1 pt.) State B’s leader expects to gain an electoral advantage if she goes to war.
(1 pt.) State A gains nuclear capability.
(8 pts.) In this problem, you’ll reconstruct and discuss the payoff matrix for the Stag Hunt game theoretic model discussed in class and your textbook. Using the attached template, label a 2-by-2 payoff matrix with:
(1 pt) ranked order preferences (4>3>2>1)
(1 pt) possible choices (eg, for the Prisoner’s Dilemma these are “cooperate” and “defect”)
In addition, write a paragraph explaining your payoff matrix, including:
(1 pt) a narrative explanation of how this matrix should be interpreted (hint: explain what the stag hunt game is)
(3 pt) an interpretation of the payoffs for each player in each possible outcome.
(2 pt) an example of the Stag Hunt as a real international relations world decision. Who are the actors? What does the stag represent? The rabbit?
ASSIGNMENT 2
(7 pt) CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AND ANSWER. Answers should be a minimum of 2 double-spaced pages. I am grading on 1) complete and accurate responses to factual elements of your chosen question, 2) your construction of an argument, and 3) Provision of evidence.

What measures does the UN take institutionally to aid states disproportionately harmed by the colonialism in the development of the nation-state system? What additional measures should they take?
Do powerful states benefit from financially supporting UN efforts to stabilize poor states? How do UN Security Council policies allow powerful states to be selective in their allocation of aid?
