As you move forward in your fashion studies, you should be aware of the industry’s long and prolific history. Part of that history includes notable and significant designers who forever changed the game with their innovative ideas. The Fashion Program at HCC houses an extensive historical collection with garments dating from the 1740s to 2000s from a variety of designers such as: Chanel, Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Helmut Lang, and so much more.
To expand your knowledge even further beyond the sewing needle, you will conduct research and write a report on a fashion designer. Each of you will be assigned a specific look from the Fashion Archive that will provide you with: the name of your designer, a few detailed images of the design, and a brief detailed description of the design to get you started on your report.
Your report should include the following information:
Cover Page: Include your name, title, submission/due date, and class/time.
Introduction: The reader of your essay should be introduced to the subject and intent of your paper. This should at least include: who your designer is, what design you are observing, or a few interesting facts to capture the reader’s attention. By the end of the introduction, you should have a thesis statement that is clearly written to allow the reader to easily identify who the designer is and what article of clothing is being referred to on the Historical Archive website.
Body Paragraph: There should be three body paragraph.
The first body paragraph should be a brief summary of the designer’s life. A few ideas you can possibly include are: the birth and death date (if it applies), educational background, significant moments or accolades, work history, family, character quotes about them from other people, and more.
The second body paragraph will be about how this designer has made an impact on the fashion industry and/or other designers. A few questions you can ask yourself are:
Which designers or their collections have been influenced or inspired by my designer? How? Why?
Did my designer start a unique trend or technique that is still practiced in the fashion industry?
Does my designer have or had a social cause they brought attention to?Remember, you are not limited to these questions.
The third paragraph requires you to observe your assigned looks and call attention to a technique used to create the garment. Some ideas are: embroidery, ruching, pick stitch, bound buttonholes, puzzle knots, French seam and more as the options are endless! You will describe the technique, how it was used in the garment, and a few interesting facts or history about the technique.
Conclusion: The conclusion should wrap up your essay with a reiteration of your thesis, a review of your supporting ideas by paraphrasing them, and connecting the ideas back to the opening ones.
References Page: A list of where you obtained your sources used to in your paper. Make sure it is in APA style and in alphabetical order. DO NOT use Wikipedia as a source for your report. You may use Wikipedia to familiarize yourself with your assigned designer, but not as a reliable source since anyone is able to change the information found on Wikipedia.
The format of the paper is a simplified APA style and should follow the guidelines below:
