Essay Assignment: An Exploratory Essay
An exploratory essay is a well organized, developed record of your exploration of a particular topic, using research sources. For example, you might investigate whether California should continue to use capital punishment, whether Congress should raise taxes on particular groups of earners, or how to best conserve water for the State of California. Your handout (in the Week 09 Module for online classes) includes a sample exploratory essay in the excerpt from Ch. 2 of Writing Argumentsby Ramage, Bean, and Johnson. This is a student on pages 44-50 (“Should Fast-Food Workers Be Paid $15 per Hour”) of that chapter. Be sure to read that sample essay.
As you work on your essay, choose four-five sources that address your topic. You can use books, articles in scholarly journals or magazines, newspaper editorials, blog posts, films, or any other source that explores your topic. (You’ll notice that the student whose essay is included in your handout used several journal articles found in an internet data base, an online news source, and a magazine article.) As you read (or watch) your sources, keep a record of your responses and the evolution of your thought on your topic. You will also prepare short summaries of each source.
For a useful guide to organizing an exploratory essay, be sure to see page 43 of the handout.
As explained there, your essay should begin with an introductory paragraph that establishes the importance of your question, includes enough background information about your topic to help your reader engage with it, perhaps explains your interest in the issue, and includes a clear statement of the question you are exploring.
The body paragraphs of your essay will summarize each source you investigate, analyze the source’s rhetorical context (see, for example, the student essay on pages 44-50, along with the chart of genres of argument on pages 26-29), and give your response to the source. What does the source add to your understanding of or thoughts about the topic? Does it raise questions? Is it lacking in particular ways? You might discuss, too, why you chose a particular source. (Did another source raise a question? Did you need more information to decide your own position on a topic?)
You don’t have to decide at each point in your exploratory essay exactly what your position is on the sources you use; rather, demonstrate your real engagement with your sources, and present a record of how your thinking changes as you read or watch the material.
Your concluding paragraph doesn’t have to give a final, definitive statement of your position on the issue, either. If you haven’t arrived at a final position, report accurately, and in detail, what you now think about the issue, what further investigation you need to do to continue to develop your thoughts, and what you think the general direction of your developing opinion is.
Your final exploratory essay should be 4-6 pages long, double spaced.
