Introduction: We use compare and contrast thinking to help us make sense of the world and to
help us make decisions. Compare and contrast is also a basic mode of argumentation. By
presenting direct comparisons between ideas and items, we can often convince others to consider
our point of view on those ideas and items. Mastering the argumentative techniques of compare
and contrast will enable you to become a more accomplished academic writer.
Assignment: For this assignment, you will use the techniques of compare and contrast.
The topic of your compare and contrast paper will be invented by choosing one of the three
quotes below. Using the quote, you will compare and/or contrast two conflicting perspectives on
the topic (much like what is done regarding narcissism in Chapter 8 of your textbook).
After you determine the topic of your compare and contrast paper, you will need to determine the
audience you are writing for and your points of comparison. After determining your audience
and points of comparison, you will then need to craft an interesting argumentative thesis
statement.
When you write your paper, your thesis will need to be supported by body paragraphs containing
goods examples and explanation—examples and explanation that will persuade your reader to
accept your claims. Without proper examples and explanation to support your claims and thesis,
your paper will be underwhelming and unpersuasive. Be sure that your supporting examples are
detailed, specific, strong, vivid, and memorable.
Also, your body paragraphs should provide examples of both of the perspectives being compared
and contrasted. That is, when you show the positive qualities of one perspective, you also need to
show the negative qualities of the other perspective. You will need to use signal (or modal)
transitions between your two subjects; this means that understanding which organization you will
use for your essay is crucial (in other words, know the organization of which of the following
patterns you will use for your essay: point by point OR subject by subject)
Finally, your paper will need have an engaging introduction and a robust conclusion,
emphasizing the overall importance of your argument.
Length: Minimum: 3 full pages (points will be deducted if the essay does not meet the
minimum requirement)
Secondary Sources: You may use up to 2 secondary sources in your writing (make sure that you
evaluate your sources for credibility and make sure to use proper MLA format for all citations).
Format: MLA Typed in 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double-spaced with one-inch margins
Topics:
THE VALUE OF A COLLEGE EDUCATION: “The value of a college education is not the
learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think” –Albert Einstein
Question of perspective being argued: Is a college education still valuable?
THE ABILITIY TO CHANGE AND INTELLIGENCE: “It is not the strongest of the species
that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin
Question of perspective being argued: What is more important: the ability to change or
intelligence?
THE ROOT OF CORRUPTION: “It is not power that corrupts, but fear. Fear of losing power
corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to
it”- Aung San Suu Kyi
Question of perspective being argued: What is the root of corruption: is it fear or is it
power?
Important Academic Writing Reminders:
This is a formal, academic essay, so keep the following in mind as you write:
1. Spell out contractions (for example: don’t= do not)
2. Do not refer to or address the reader (no use of 2nd person: you, your, you’re, yours etc).
3. Write in 3rd person. It is the most objective voice and is most appropriate for academic
writing
4. You MUST take a side, and your opinion must be supported with reasons and details.
Good Luck!
WHAT IS COMPARE/CONTRAST?
• A COMPARE CONTRAST ESSAY FOCUSES ON SIMILARITIES (COMPARE) AND/OR DIFFERENCES
(CONTRAST) BETWEEN TWO SUBJECTS, IDEAS, OR PERSPECTIVES WITH THE PURPOSE TO EVALUATE.
• WE USE COMPARE/CONTRAST TO ASSIST US IN MAKING DECISIONS, IN EXPLORING VIEWPOINTS, AND
DETERMINING THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION
• FOR COLLEGE CLASSES, STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO EXPLORE COMPLEX VIEWPOINTS AND SUPPORT
THEIR OPINIONS AND BELIEFS
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO COMPARE
PERSPECTIVES?
• COMPARING PERSPECTIVES HELPS US:
• IDENTIFY SPECIFIC POINTS BEING DISCUSSED
• ANALYZE WHERE OPINIONS INTERSECT AND DIVERGE
• DETERMINE,, POINT BY POINT, THE DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES
• REFLECT ON THE POINTS UNDER DEBATE
• FORMULATE OUR OWN VIEW
HOW DO WRITERS COMPARE
PERSPECTIVES?
• 1. START BY POSING A QUESTION, NOT OF FACT BUT OF OPINION, A QUESTION ON WHICH REASONABLE
PEOPLE MIGHT DISAGREE (YOU WILL SEE ME ASK YOU QUESTIONS ON THE ESSAY ASSIGNMENT SHEET)
• 2. ASK HOW PEOPLE HAVE ANSWERED THE QUESTION. THIS INVOLVES SOME KIND OF RESEARCH
• 3. COMPARE HOW PEOPLE HAVE ANSWERED THE QUESTION
IS NARCISSISM INCREASING AMONG
YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES?
• CONSIDER THE ESSAYS ON NARCISSISM ON PAGES 181-185
• REVIEW THE ASSIGNMENT FROM BEGINNING TO END ON PAGES 186-201 (THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE
PROCESS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW FOR YOUR FIRST ESSAY ASSIGNMENT)
TRANSITIONS AND SIGNAL WORDS FOR
COMPARE/CONTRAST
SIGNAL WORDS FOR COMPARISON
• ALIKE, AS, AS WELL AS, EQUALLY
• IN A SIMILAR FASHION, IN A SIMILAR WAY, IN
LIKE MANNER, IN THE SAME WAY
• JUST AS, JUST LIKE, LIKE, LIKEWISE, SIMILARLY
• RESEMBLE, SAME, SIMILAR, SIMILARITY
SIGNAL WORDS FOR CONTRAST
• ALTHOUGH, AS OPPOSED TO, AT THE SAME TIME,
BUT, BY CONTRAST
• CONVERSELY, DESPITE, DIFFERENCE, DIFFERENT,
DIFFERENT FROM, DIFFERENTLY
• EVEN THOUGH, IN CONTRAST, IN SPITE OF, INSTEAD
• NEVERTHELESS, ON THE CONTRARY, ON THE ONE
HAND/ON THE OTHER HAND
ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERNS FOR ESSAY 1
SUBJECT BY SUBJECT (OR BLOCK)
•
COMPLETELY DISCUSSES ALL THE POINTS ABOUT ONE
SUBJECT BEFORE DISCUSSING ALL THE POINTS ABOUT
THE SECOND SUBJECT (YOU CANNOT USE THIS
ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERN WHEN DISCUSSING ANY TYPE
OF ART: LITERATURE, PAINTINGS, SONGS, MOVIES ETC,
WHICH IS WHY I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS
PATTERN) THE SAMPLE ESSAY, “SUBURBAN SAFARI” IS
WRITTEN IN SUBJECT BY SUBJECT ORGANIZATION.
POINT BY POINT
•
DISCUSSES EACH POINT SEPARATELY AND APPLIES THE
POINT TO EACH SUBJECT BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE
NEXT POINT. EACH POINT OF COMPARISON IS A BODY
PARAGRAPH. (POINT BY POINT IS THE MOST COMMON
ORGANIZATION PATTERN…IT IS THE PATTERN I SUGGEST
YOU USE BECAUSE IT HAS NO LIMITATIONS AND CAN BE
USED FOR ANY TOPIC; IT IS ALSO THE SAME PATTERN
USED IN THE SAMPLE ESSAY “READING THE WAVES”
THE ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERN
CHANGES THE COMPOSITION OF THE
TOPIC SENTENCES AND PLACEMENT OF
TRANSITIONS
CONSIDER THE SAMPLE OUTLINES ON THE NEXT TWO SLIDES
