ENGL 2311 Tarrant County College Bad News Letter question 1:
In this activity, pretend that you are the manager of a large sporting goods store that has been trying to establish an internet business for the past nine months. A customer, Mr. James Moore, writes you that he purchased a camping refrigerator for $150. Before this purchase, Moore has made three smaller online purchases from your site totaling about $60. Mr. Moore tells you that a friend of his ordered the same refrigerator “a few days” after he bought his and was charged $48 less.
You investigate the situation and discover the following facts:
Mr. Moore ordered his camping refrigerator early in August during the camping season. However, the last of August, three weeks after Moore had bought his refrigerator, the store ran a special sale which reduced major camping equipment up to 40%. The refrigerator was reduced during that sale to $102.
You mailed circulars and sent emails announcing the sale, and Mr. Moore is on both mailing lists.
You decide that you cannot establish a precedent of giving sale prices to customers who purchase the item before special sales are announced, especially after 3 weeks and during a change of seasons. Write a letter to Moore denying his request but keeping his goodwill and future business. Be reasonable but don’t go overboard. Don’t give him a refund, and if you choose to give him any future incentives (coupon, special discount, etc.), be frugal.
You may make up the required details (create an address for your business and Mr. Moore; send the letter from Your Last Name Sporting Goods, etc.). Don’t forget to use full block letter formatting (see page 370 in the textbook). You can be creative with the company name, letterhead, etc., as well as your solution to the problem.
Note: This is a “bad news” letter (see page 375 for an example).
The letter will be graded based on:
Tone
Clarity (including correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling)
Correct elements (paragraphs, tone, good will maintained, etc.) as outlined in the textbook
Correct letter formatting
After you drafted your bad news letter to Mr. Moore, you remember that your regional manager for marketing, Ms. Quarles, asked that you send her a copy of any bad news letters to her as an attachment to an email.
Draft an email using your MyTCC email address with the subject line that indicates the purpose and content of the email. The email should be 250 words or less and convey enough information about the context of the letter and your response that Ms. Quarles will understand the purpose of the attachment without opening it.
In order to submit this assignment, create a single file using the attached document with the email on the first page and the bad news letter on the second. Upload the completed document to the Dropbox below.
This email will be graded based on:
Tone
Clarity (including correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling)
Accuracy
Word count
Formatting
This is a polished project and should reflect careful planning, writing, and revision. This assignment is worth 100 points (50 points each for the bad news letter and the email).
Question 2:
This week we are going to dive into Twitter a little bit in search for some professional microbloggers that are good resources in our respective fields. You should each find one microblogger that is in your current or desired field, is tweeting as a professional (so not their private account), and would be beneficial for you as a student and professional to follow. If you are having trouble finding one, let me know!
YOU SHOULD BEGIN BY ESTABLISHING WHO THE MICROBLOGGER IS, THEIR TWITTER HANDLE, AND PROFESSIONAL CAPACITY OF THE MICROBLOGGER YOU ARE EVALUATING. PROVIDE TWO CRITERIA THAT YOU BELIEVE ARE CRITICAL IN YOUR FIELD AND AS A WRITER TO BEING PROFESSIONAL AND RELEVANT AS A MICROBLOGGER. USE THE CHECKLISTS ON PAGES 380 AND 384, AS WELL AS YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE, TO CREATE THESE CRITERIA. THESE CRITERIA SHOULD BE CRAFTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY COULD BE APPLIED TO ANY MICROBLOGGER IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL FIELD. EVALUATE YOUR MICROBLOGGER BASED ON YOUR TWO CRITERIA. THIS POST SHOULD BE 150-250 WORDS.
Keep in mind that this journal entry can be viewed by your classmates! This post will be graded based on completion, and it is worth 15 points.
Here is an example!
Qing Bai, @Qing29150993, Interim Vice President for Academic Outreach and Student Success, TCC Connect Campus.
My criteria for evaluating an microblogger is that they provide professionally relevant, unbiased information and that they post regularly, but not excessively, about events or information relevant to my field.
Qing Bai’s Twitter page is useful for me as a full time instructor at an online campus for several reasons. Since she is the Interim Vice President for Academic Outreach and Student Success on my campus, the information included in her posts is directly tied to events and updates that include the student body on my campus. Staying informed about student activities and engagement on my campus is a vital for any instructor.
Furthermore, her posts help me stay informed about student engagement in areas that my discipline (English) doesn’t often touch directly, but that can frequently be beneficial to my students. Ms. Bai’s posts help me stay aware of this aspect of academia.
Ms. Bai’s posts regularly about events, conferences, and opportunities for student engagement. Since her Twitter account often focuses on TCC Connect-specific content, I don’t expect her to post as frequently as I would if the account was focused on theory or creative/inspiration for instructors. She posts once or twice a month on relevant content, and this matches my anticipated output for an account of this type.
