Our final essay assignment is a Final Exam
Essay about drama, with a focus on William
Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Choose one of four options detailed below
and write a complete essay presenting and
supporting clear interpretive claims. Your
essay should be between 1000 and 1200
words (longer is fine, shorter probably not),
and include references.
Deadline: 23:55 June 5
24-hour penalty-free grace period. 10%
grade penalty after that until the course
closes as long as Prof GGP receives an
emailed and accessible essay before she
turns in her grades.
DRAMA ESSAY OPTIONS

1. Shakespeare adeptly uses dialogue (as
well as soliloquies) to reveal much about
several characters. Choose one
character from the list of characters with
smaller parts below, find a relevant
episode from the play, and tell us what
we can infer about the character from
the text. Characters: Claudius, Gertrude,
Polonius, Ophelia, Laertes, Horatio,
Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern. Do not
write about Hamlet for this option!
2. Find four or five instances of images,
metaphors, repeated key lines, or
symbols. What meanings do these
symbolic elements convey? How? Use
lines from the play to support your
analysis.
3. Examine the roles taken by women in the
play. Consider the roles of women in any
other dramatic offering a play or a
movie—you have watched more
recently. How are they similar? How are
they different? How have four hundred
years of human history changed the
roles played by women in these two
dramas? Do the best you can to cite and
provide a reference for the other text.

Shakespeare was influenced by his
audiences in how he wrote the play? In
what ways are Elizabethan ideas
reflected? Since you will use additional
sources to answer this question, do not
