Rhetorical Analysis
The video I chose to analyze is DaBaby & Roddy Rich’s BET award nominee
“Rockstar”. This song was a hit by DaBaby and after he made a remix with Roddy Rich
it debuted on the RS top 100 chart. DaBaby was born and raised in Cleveland Ohio. He
raps about his life and the hardships he faced as a black man. When the incident with
George Floyd occurred he decided to make a remix to his number one song with a
music video of how Georgle Floyd’s death occurred. Roddy Rich is also a young up
coming artist with many hits. Roddy Rich grew up in Compton California which is a very
dangerous neighborhood to grow up in. Both of these rappers
The music video starts off with DaBaby laying flat on his belly with a white police
officer’s knee on his neck. The recreation of the traumatic video of Floyd’s suffocation
by police was accompanied by a verse about DaBaby’s own encounters with police
brutality and racial profiling. The video then goes on showing mini clips of protests and
rioting occurring all around the world to support the Black Lives Matter movement. At
approximately the 3:25 mark of the video you can see a police officer switching sides to
support the protesters. At this point of the video this shows some cops do believe in
ethos, what they do is wrong at times. Not all cops are the same, some do believe in
change. Towards the end of the music video you can see a young girl crying and
holding a sign that says “MORE LOVE”. The way the sign is presented shows Pathos
because it is a young black child holding a sign that says “MORE LOVE” when a young
child shouldn’t even have to worry about anything like that.
As we move on to analyze the lyrics DaBaby starts of with

For essay two, you will be writing a rhetorical analysis. You will examine how a text uses words, images,
and sound to influence/affect an audience. Remember: for our purposes, a “text” is not just words on
paper.
There are several options:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
Analyze a music video of your choosing
Analyze speech/oral presentation (must be a video version)
Analyze a movie trailer (must be video)
Analyze an advertisement/commercial (Super Bowl ads work well)
Analyze another piece of media (digital?) of your choosing (must be approved by ME)
Do not choose too lengthy a text (less than 5 minutes is preferable, though speeches may be longer).
Shorter pieces allow you to delve deeper and write a more intricate analysis.
NOTE: Do not write your essay on any the videos discussed in class or the sample analyses on
our D2L site.
Where do a find a text?
• Music videos and movie trailers in all genres (as well as commercials) are widely available on the
internet
• A good place to find a suitable speech: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/
It’s your responsibility to select a text that lends itself to writing a developed analysis. Be sure there is
enough material to make meaningful points.
How do I analyze my text?
You will examine your text rhetorically, in terms of purpose, audience, and context, paying particular
attention to the rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. Please consult the rhetoric power point and
links on D2L before you write your analysis. You will want break down the text (like we have done in
class), considering the separate parts and how they work together as a cohesive whole. A rhetorical
analysis is not a plot summary. It’s not even (entirely) about trying to understand the meaning of a work.
Per the course theme, we are concerned with how the video communicates (method), not just what it
communicates. As you consider the ethos, pathos, and logos of your text, pay attention to the following
elements:
1) Auditory
• What does the piece sound like? Consider the genre/style of music, tone of a speaker,
and/or the “feel” communicated by aural aspects of ethos, pathos, and logos.
2) Verbal (esp. for speeches)
• How do the words of the speech (or lyrics of the song, voiceover for a trailer, etc.) relate
to ethos, pathos and logos?
3) Visual
• What do you see? What is the focal point? Is the speaker/band/artist shown? Can you
describe the imagery? What purpose does it serve? What kinds of shots, camera
angles, and editing techniques appear to be utilized?

In a broad sense, you must look at the verbal/visual/auditory components of ethos, pathos, and logos, not
only separately, but also in terms of how they work together to construct an overall message. Try to do
more than merely identify instances of ethos/pathos/logos—consider how these components serve to
make the text rhetorically effective (or not).
Where do I start?
Once you select your video clip, get to know it. Examine it closely through various lenses. Try watching it
with the sound off (e.g., hit “mute” or turn off the speakers). Conversely, try listening to it without the
visuals (e.g., turn off the screen or just don’t look at it). Then try it as is, with both sounds and visuals. As
you do each, take notes. How do the perspectives differ? Try to think rhetorically, in terms of purpose,
audience, and context. What rhetorical choices have been made (method)? What effect do these
choices have?
BE AS DESCRIPTIVE AND DETAILED AS POSSIBLE. It isn’t enough to note that the video has (for
example) “an ominous feel” – what about the auditory/visual/verbal gives it that feel? Be specific, and try to
think in terms of ethos, pathos, and logos.
