ENGL 1010 HCC Negative Effect of Fluoride on Teeth and Bones Bibliography PART 3: Annotated Bibliography
Final Draft Due: (due by 11:00pm via Blackboard)
DEFINITION
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.). An annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources.
ASSIGNMENT
Compile an annotated bibliography of five (5) outside sources intended for the approved researched paper. For each source, provide the following information (the letters in the example summary correspond to the required information listed below):
a)Bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc. [Bedford chapter 56]).
b)The rhetorical context of the source. What type of writing is it? What is the purpose for writing the article/book? Who is the intended audience? (one or two sentences)
c)A summary of the source: What is the point of this book or article? What are the main arguments? What topics are covered? The summary should be written in the third person. (three to four sentences)
d)An evaluation of the source: Assess the reliability and credibility of the source, and state how it fits into your research. (one sentence)
Each source summary should be written in third person and present tense. MLA format should be used for the bibliographic information. Each summary should be no longer than 100 words.
You will complete this assignment in class, but make sure that you already have your sources to be included in the bibliography. Feel free to use sources from part two. Once class is over the submission link will disappear. Late assignments will not be accepted. No exceptions.

1. Schmoe, Joe S. “Liquor Ads Take a Licking.” Beverage World. Feb. 1998: 33-37. (a)
This news article is written specifically for members of the liquor industry. (b)
Schmoe chronicles the latest public and political actions and threats against televised liquor advertising, including recent statements by the FCC, FTC, President Clinton, and a number of consumer advocacy groups. The article uses statistics to document the increase in the media coverage of the issue since the lifting of the voluntary ban in November 1997. Schmoe also outlines some options, aside from increased regulation, to respond effectively to such “media menaces.” Schmoe shows a bias in favor of liquor advertising, but he includes quotations from authorities on both sides. (c) This is a good source of evidence about public opinions on the liquor advertising debate.(d)

PURPOSE
To learn about a specific topic: Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when one has to write annotations for each source, one is forced to read each source more carefully. This stimulates critical research instead of just collecting information.
To evaluate sources for credibility, reliability, and relevance.
To help formulate a thesis: Every good research paper is an argument. The purpose of research is to state and support a thesis. So a very important part of research is developing a thesis that is debatable, interesting, and current.
Writing an annotated bibliography can help one gain a good perspective on what is being said about a specific topic. By reading and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, one can determine what the issues are and what people are arguing about.
