Annotated Bibliography
Due: Sunday, May 19, by Midnight, California time
Description:
A bibliography is a list of sources you are using for your essay; it needs to be
done according to MLA guidelines. This is an Annotated
Bibliography which means that after each entry you need to give a brief
description of the type of source (a book, article, etc), and how you plan to
use it. I.e. you must explain which idea the source is used to support and how
it fits into your overall argument.
Not all the sources listed here will necessarily end up in your paper, and you
may find additional sources after you’ve turned this in, but it is helpful in
getting your research more focused as you learn HOW you’ll use the sources
you’ve found.
If you need to refresh your memory about the format, etc. Take a look at

Introduction:
While we all know that advertisements are all around us, many of us never
pause to think what advertisements might say about us as a culture. On the
face of it, ads present us with products or services we are to buy. A closer
look, however, also reveals insight into the desires, or fears, of consumers.
That is, we want to buy a certain product both because we desire the product
and because we desire some association with the product, or some fear
which we think the product can eliminate. In the Breakfast cereal ad I chose,
the advertisers are selling more than granola, they are selling Americans
desire for a healthier lifestyle.
Thesis:
In the Breakfast cereal ad I chose, the advertisers are selling more than
granola, they are selling Americans desire for a healthier lifestyle.
Outline:
1. Introduction
2. The model in the ad. He is a fit-looking man in work-out clothes.
3. The setting. The background is a room with exercise machine
4. The text in the ad. It points out the healthy ingredients of the cereal
5. The American Medical Association logo, which helps strengthen the
connection between the cereal and health.
6. The colors. Green is associated with calm and connects the cereal, health,
and lack of stress.
Conclusion: The ads strategy makes clear that American consumers are
concerned with their health and desire a healthy lifestyle. While there are
many reasons for this concern, I think its because we all have busy, hectic
lives that do not allow time for exercise. A healthy cereal may help this
situation, but it wont fix it.

Background
In this unit we are discussing Superheroes (and Supervillains) and what they
reveal about our society, an extension of the work youve been doing all
semester. During the semester youve been doing a lot of reading, thinking
and writing about the relationship between pop culture and the society that
produces it. now you will apply your considerable knowledge and the skills
youve acquired to discussing one Super-character and the trends, values,
philosophies and attitudes of U.S. culture that are reflected by this character.
Unlike the previous essays youve written for this class, this paper is a
research paper. I will post tips about how to conduct research and I
encourage you to talk to the librarians at DVC. The topic of your research will
not be the specific character you are writing about, but rather about the
trends, values, etc., that you argue the character reflects. We will talk about
this aspect of the paper in great detail.
As this is a complex paper, Ive designed it in several stages, which I will
explain, and which have a due date specific to each stage. They will also
comprise part of the overall grade for the essay. You must do each step in this
process in order to succeed with the final draft of the paper.
Your Task
Write a paper in which you discuss one Superhero, or Supervillain and its
cultural significance. The significance you will explore is not why the character
is important but what it signifies about U.S. Society. What trends, values,
philosophies and attitudes of contemporary U.S. culture does the character
you chose reflect? How does she/he/it do that? I encourage you to think of
characters that fulfill the function and characteristics of a Super-character
rather than a traditional superhero. Also, remember that you may NOT write
about Superman, Batman, or Spiderman. In your essay you need to use 45 sources. You may use two from our textbook; the rest need to be
outside texts.
Process Tips
You can go about this paper in different ways. One good way is to think of
the Super-characters youve seen and that struck you as interesting. Why
were they interesting? Which one was the most interesting, and why? How
does this aspect of the character relate, in your opinion, to U.S.
culture? Does it reflect, for example, consumerism, individualism, religion? It
may reflect other, equally interesting facets of U.S. culture. When you have
some ideas about what the movie reflects, start researching those things; look
up articles on consumerism in U.S. society, for example. Write down your
ideas and what you find in your research so you can keep track of yours and
others ideas. Formulate a working thesis to guide your writing and your
research. As always, talk to others: your friends, peers, family, me.
