ENGLISH 120 SLOS
Students will:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of important rhetorical concepts such as audience, purpose,
genre, and context.
2. Identify and analyze rhetorical and organizational strategies from a variety of texts and
employ appropriate strategies to compose thesis-driven essays.
3. Construct logically developed essays that synthesize, integrate, and contextualize multiple
outside sources (through quotations, paraphrasing, and summary) with their own voice,
analysis, or position, using appropriate documentation.
Important! ABSOLUTELY NO CHEATING. THIS EXAM SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY YOU
AND YOU ONLY, INCLUDING CRITICALLY READING TURKLE’S ARTICLE BEFOREHAND.
IF YOU KNOW OTHER STUDENTS IN THE CLASS/ANYONE WHO HAS TAKEN THIS EXAM
ALREADY, DO NOT INTERACT WITH THEM ABOUT THE FINAL EXAM. CHEATING ON
THE FINAL EXAM WILL EARN YOU AN “F” (A ZERO) ON THE EXAM, POTENTIALLY AN “F”
IN THE ENTIRE COURSE, AND THE INCIDENT WILL BE REPORTED AND WILL GO ON
YOUR ACADEMIC RECORD.
Be confident! Remember that you have developed all the skills you need already from the
other assignments all semester long! The other essays have prepared you for this final. The
purpose of the final exam is to assess the skills you have developed, so you should be exiting
this course hopefully being proud of yourself and what you can do as a critical reader,
thinker, and writer!

English 120 FINAL EXAM Essay
Writing Prompt: Read and carefully consider these two opinion articles
published in the New York Times: Sherry Turkle’s “Stop Googling, Let’s Talk”
(2015). D and Jane E. Brody’s “Hooked on Our Smartphones” (2017). D
(note: these are PDFS that you should download without losing this screen page).
These two authors address people’s relationship to their
smartphones. Though both authors have constructed their texts
differently, Turkle and Brody are 1) writing essentially to the same
audience AND 2) making similar arguments. While there are similarities in
their rhetorical approaches, there are also some significant differences.
In a well-organized and cohesive essay that integrates your analysis of
BOTH texts, write a reasoned position on which text is more rhetorically
effective in persuading and appealing to the intended audience.
Your essay should include an introduction, as many body paragraphs as is
necessary, and a conclusion that is organized and developed in direct
response to the writing assignment. Your essay should clearly
communicate your ideas with an attention to detail. Your essay should
consider the body of evidence and rhetorical strategies that the writers use
to persuade and appeal to their intended audience.
Successful papers will:

which text is more rhetorically effective in persuading and appealing to
the intended audience;
3. Argue your position clearly, focusing on the body of evidence and
rhetorical strategies from the assigned texts:
1. Integrate evidence and examples from the texts through quoting
and paraphrasing, using appropriate documentation;
2. Analyze these textual examples to support your position;
4. Conclude thoughtfully;
5. Cohesively structure your essay with effective transitions so that your
reader does not get lost while reading;
6. Clearly communicate your ideas for an educated reader and be mostly
