ENG 1027 West Virginia University Outback Steakhouse and Ruby Tuesday Analysis Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is for you to start thinking about how we use evaluative processes to make decisions on a daily basis.
This unit has potentially wide applications. We evaluate when selecting sources for an academic paper as a way of weeding out the sources that are not credible. We evaluate when booking
vacation flights (Where is the flight flying out of? How much is the flight? How much does the airline
charge per bag?) We are always asking ourselves these sorts of questions when we make decisions. We are always weighing the options and looking at the different components of the subject in question.
I would like to compare: OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE VS RUBY TUESDAY
For this particular project you are tasked with evaluating a restaurant/dining
establishment—in a sense, you’re writing a restaurant review. Once you select a place to
write about, you’ll want to establish a criteria you can use to evaluate it. Your evaluative
criteria depends on what you look for in that context. Think about your expectations and how
they measure up to your experience. Given our present circumstances, much of this will be
done from memory. But there is also room to make the writing more relevant by perhaps
considering how the establishment in question has responded to COVID-19.
900 words minimum
A clear evaluative criteria which indicates how you are looking at the subject of your evaluation and
is applied equally across the board.
A clear and argumentative thesis statement which notes whether or not your subject is successful
according to your evaluative criteria
Remember, nothing is perfect. You should have some sort of counterargument.
Also note, you don’t have to evaluate something you like. Just remember the risk of charged emotional language coming across like a rant. Evaluation Project Assignment Sheet

A works cited page where you cite any applicable information. For example, if you were using
population statistics to discuss the context of your selected topic, that’s of course something
you’d
want to cite.
This is not included in the minimum word count
Please see your Easy Writer textbook for MLA formatting questions.
Note: in many cases you will not need to use outside sources
An additional page for reflection where you answer the following questions (Each question
should
be answered with at least 6-7 sentences):
What do you consider to be the greatest strength of this project? Why?
If you had two more days to work on this project what would you add? How would that
strengthen the piece?
What would you like me to focus on the most in my feedback and why?
Trouble Spots:
Much like with the editorial, you want to have some personal experience with your selected topic.
You want to be quite familiar with it. So, if you’ve never been to a Starbucks, you wouldn’t want to
write a paper in which you compare Starbucks to Dunkin’.
Incorporate comparisons, but don’t only compare and contrast. Here you’ll have your main topic.
Comparisons will be used to either show instances where your selected topic doesn’t live up to
expectations and/or to show how your selected place is elevated above similar places. This is all
done to help you prove your argument.
