– You can use both Lee’s Little Liars and Gladwell’s The Order of Things, OR

– You can use one of those two texts and one more academic or nonfiction piece that you find on your own (check with me if you’re unsure if you can use a particular source/text)

Little Liars: file:///C:/Users/Admin/Downloads/Little%20Liars%20by%20Kang%20Lee%20(1).pdf

The Order of Things: file:///C:/Users/Admin/Downloads/Gladwell-The%20Order%20of%20Things%20(3)%20(1).pdf

You will structure your paper as follows:

PARAGRAPH ONE: Introduce the topic of study from your readings. You might narrow this down to one specific focus from the two readings … you don’t have to focus on the entire reading (this is a short paper), but you can focus on one aspect of the topic. Present that narrowed topic here. You want to clearly define the field(s) that this topic belongs to, who might be interested in reading about/studying this topic, and why they would be interested. (Think about this as being where you present the subject/audience/purpose.)

PARAGRAPH TWO: Present what the first reading had to say about the topic you’ve chosen to focus on in this synthesis. What questions, if any, does the article raise about this topic and how does the author address that/those questions. Somewhere in the paragraph, present one KEY (i.e. important/vital/pivotal) quote from the text to show what the author is saying about this topic. You want to introduce the quote with the author’s name and a verb. Example: Gladwell argues “quote” (page 2). Then fully explain the quote (use at least as many words explaining the quote as the words in the quote).

PARAGRAPH THREE: Present the second reading and how it relates to the first reading. You should see this paragraph as adding to the previous paragraphs. This is the beginning of your synthesis skills (putting pieces together). Use transition words, especially words of comparison (similarity and conflict in link below), to show how this second article relates to the first. (See this link to transition words: https://msu.edu/user/jdowell/135/transw.html#anchor1696929Links to an external site. (Links to an external site.)). Focus on how this article extends the understanding of the topic you are discussing in this paper. Somewhere in the paragraph, you will want to present one KEY quote from the text to show what the author adds to this conversation on this topic.

PARAGRAPH FOUR: This is where you will present the insights, or “so what,” regarding this synthesis. You want to begin this paragraph with a few sentences showing the key findings from bringing the two articles together. That is, what was learned by bringing the articles together in conversation? You want to move to the new* things that can be concluded due to the synthesis and, ultimately, present a direction for future research due to a “gap” in the understanding that you found. That is, when you bring those articles together, what is still unknown about the topic? Where can future research go?

*The new thing you find out is what is NEW TO YOU! Don’t worry about whether or not the idea is really new — if it’s new to YOU then it is new.

SKILLS TO WORK ON:

– Discussing articles by focusing on a narrow portion of the article

– Bringing two articles into conversation

– Incorporating quotes into the text

– Drawing conclusions

– Presenting a research question

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

– Minimum of 700 words (about 175+ words/paragraph)

– MLA page formatting

– Mostly clear of grammatical/mechanical errors

– Clearly presents the focused topic in the intro

– Presents your two readings

– One quote in paragraph 2 and one in paragraph 3

– Presents a research question in the end
