Embranquecimento in Brazil: Ham’s Redemption
The painting The Redemption of Ham, or A Redenção de Cam in Portuguese, depicts a black grandmother, her mixed-race daughter, and white son-in law. She is raising her hands in prayer, praising God that her grandson, also depicted in the painting, is white.
The painting was painted by Spanish painter Modesto Brocos in 1895 (Who Are We, Really? 2017), and is still very relevant in what it means to be black or mixed race in Brazil, and how skin color still dictates many aspects of life.
The painting represents the Brazilian ideology of “embranquecimento” of the black genetic line, meaning, the act of “whitening” it (Berth, 2018). Brazil is a country where non-whites now make up a majority of the population. It’s one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world; home to 97 million African descendants – the largest number of blacks outside Africa.
