EE 2301: Circuit Analysis – I
Department of Electrical Engineering
Kennesaw State University
Objectives:
a. In this Lab Exercise, students will analytically find the value of the load resistor RL in a given circuit
where the maximum power is delivered to the load using Thévenin’s analysis.
b. Use MATLAB to demonstrate equations solving skills.
c. Use LTspice to determine the voltages, current, and power dissipation in a circuit.
d. Use LTspice to simulations to determine the value of the load resistor RL for which maximum power
transfer occurs.
e. Compare LTspice simulation results with analytical results compute % errors.
Task 1. Thévenin Analysis
a. Analytical Calculations:
Determine the resulting Thévenin equivalent for circuit 1 by calculating the VOC (using Voltage Divider
Rule or Nodal Analysis), ISC (using Mesh Analysis) and RTH (using Delta-Wye conversion with voltage
source deactivated). You must show detailed step-by-step calculations with relevant circuit diagrams.
Given: R1 = 1 k?, R2 = 2.2 k?, R3 = 820 ?, R4 = 220 ?, R6 = 470 ?, RL = 330 ?.
Write your final answers in Table 1 of the Datasheet and attach the calculations in the Appendix section.
Without calculations, no points will be awarded for Table 1.
Circuit 1.

b. LTspice Simulations:
Sketch the circuit in LTspice and then use the .op simulation command (DC operating point) to find
all voltages and currents. Add a text box* containing your Name, Lab # and the Due Date, prior to
saving the file. Then take two screenshots – (i) LTspice circuit schematic (use the windows Snipping
Tool) and (ii) the simulated results window (Operating Point window) and put them into the Datasheet.
You do not need to submit the LTspice file through D2L. However, you must save it in your computer.
In case of any issues, the instructor may contact you to provide the original LTspice file later.
*To add a textbox in your schematic, go to ? Edit ?
Text. Then type in the textbox. A sample is shown on
the right. Click OK to place the text in your
schematic. It is recommended that you put this text on
top of the circuit schematic. Make sure to take the
screenshot so that this text is clearly visible.
Task 2. Maximum Power Transfer
First save the previous LTspice file with a different name and then modify circuit as follows:
• Change the value of the RL from 330? to {R}
Note: It is important to have the curly brackets.
This will now allow us to sweep the value of RL to find out at what resistance value the maximum
power is delivered to RL.
• To sweep the value of RL ? Go to Edit ? SPICE Directive ? within the textbox type the
following command:
.step param R 100 2.5k 100
The above command will vary the value of RL from 100? to 2.5k? in 100? increments (lower
range – higher range – increment). Click OK to place the command within the schematic.
• Now simulate the circuit ? Simulation ? Run.
• A blank graph will pop up. Now we will plot the Power dissipated in RL vs the value of RL to find
out at what RL value the dissipated power is maximum. To add the Power plot, press the Alt key
and with the Alt key pressed hover your mouse over the load resistor ? The cursor will change
to a thermometer looking symbol ? Left click to plot the Power.
• If your circuit and simulation are correct, then you should see a peak on the power curve. Follow
the steps below to find out the maximum power and the RL value corresponding to this maximum
power:
• First maximize the plot window.
Then Right click on V*I
expression shown above the
graph. A window will pop up.
Select ‘1st’ in the Attached
Cursor. Click OK to place the
cursor within the graph window.
Page 2/3
•
•
•
Hover the mouse near the crosshair of the placed cursor. The cursor will change to 1.
Drag the cursor and place the crosshair at the peak of the power curve.
Note: The cursor coordinate is displayed in the cursor position
window as shown in right. As you move your cursor, the
horizontal and vertical position values will change. Adjust the
position of the cursor near the peak to achieve a maximum
value displayed on the ‘Vert’ window. Then note the Maximum
Power and the RL values in the Datasheet.
Take a screenshot of the plot window with the cursor placed at
the Peak and the cursor position window placed at the middle
of the graph (make sure that it does not obscure the plot).
Tip 1: If the graph window flickers, the in a windows PC you can open the Task Manager
(Ctrl+Alt+Del) window and then just close the Task Manager window (Don’t close LTspice).
This often fixes the flickering screen issue. Else you have to restart LTspice. As you progress,
always keep saving your latest work.
Tip 1: For best visibility, it is recommended that you make the plot thicker and set the color of the
plot to a darker color, such as Red, Blue or Black. Also, make the cursor thicker, so that its easily
visible. These techniques were mentioned in earlier labs/tutorials. For your quick reference: you
can access the menu to change trace widths and cursor widths here ? Tools ? Control Panel ?
Waveforms.
End of Lab Exercise
Submit the Datasheet including all analytical calculations and screenshots through the D2L
assignment submission folder “Lab-5 Datasheet Submission”.
