Edwidge Danticat
As a mother and a wife, the Haitian American novelist born in Port-au-Prince in Haiti, Edwidge Danticat, was born on January 19, 1969, rising to become a renowned novelist in America. Her novels mainly focus on the relationships and lives of women, matters of power, poverty levels, and various injustices. The main books she has managed to write include Farming bones, the dew breaker, Breath Eyes Memory, krik, and Krak. The books have made her become an award winner at of different prices,[spelling] such as the American book award and a finalist to the National book award finalist. More so, her books have made it to international scenes involving other awards such as the Faulkner Award finalist and the inaugural Story Prize winner (Munro, 2010).
The story of her life began at the age of two years when her parents escaped Haiti following the oppressive rule by François Duvalier, who became Haiti leader for fourteen years. Through losing their parents’ care at that tender age, she grew to realize how a bad political situation and poor governance could negatively affect the ways of life. This came about after she and her brother failed to escape together with her parents, living them under the care of their relatives. At the age of twelve years, they managed to join their parents in a Haitian-American area where all the immigrants from Haiti settled. The feeling of not belonging made her focus on literature whereby her first published story was for Cremace and Creole Theatre. The story, A Haitian- American Christmas [Titles of short stories are not italicized, and they are bracketed by quotation marks.] written in the English language published when she was fourteen years of age (Munro, 2010).
Significantly, her education life coupled with hardships to cope in the American set up having adapted the Haiti way of life and language. [sentence fragment] However, she managed to graduate from Barnard College in New York City in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in French Literature. Her parents had hoped she would pursue a career in medicine that never came to be the reality. In an attempt to express her immigration story, Edwidge wrote another story named A New World Full of Strangers as an expression of her dissatisfaction with the political system. Continually, [This word makes the sentence say a different thing than what you are trying to say.] she upgraded to her first novel titled Breath Eyes Memory that began bringing her in the limelight. After graduating, she began working as a secretary, advancing her education to achieve a Master’s degree in Fine Art from Brown University in Providence, Rhodes Island (Gale, 2016).
Notably, she used her first published book as a thesis for her Masters that focused on information relating to the relationships between various generations of Haitian women. The publication of the book was in 1994 after her graduation in 1993. The following year, she published another book called “Kirk? Krak!” [Why is the title different here than the way you have it in paragraph 1? Also, the titles of full length books do not have quotation marks.; Only the titles of short stories and poems have quotation marks.] involving short stories with the name emerging from a Haitian storytelling conversation where the storyteller calls and the audience responds. This short story’s novel [What is a “short story’s novel”?] managed to become a finalist in the National book awards. Following this, she published another novel in 1998 named The Farming of Bones representing the Haitian phrase for harvesting cane. The story has its storyline set on is about the massacre of Haitian citizens by the dictator in 1937 (Gale, 2016). Currently living in Miami with her family, she has managed to scoop many awards, including the renowned Pushcart Short Story Awards. Moreover, her first novel featured in the Oprah show in her television book club. This selection resulted in her gaining a substantial audience resulting in financial success through commercialization. Over the years, she has managed to publish other works that focused on the exploration of Haitian history. The publications included the novel called The Dew Breaker, published in 2004 that analyzed various instances that characterized the torturous moments administered to Haitian immigrants. Another release on the same issue that won the National book critics award titled, Brother, I am dying in 2007 (Danticat, 2017).
Indeed, her career in literature has grown continuously, coupled with teaching at both New York University and Miami University, focusing on teaching creative writing. With her novels varying between fiction and nonfiction stories, she has managed to explore the plight Haiti, and its citizens went through under the dictatorial leadership. Her books focus on the incidences of social injustices and various interpersonal conflicts that arise following adverse political environments. The other topic she has focused on involves the role of women in society and illustrating them as the pillars of economic development through globalization (Collins, 2019).
According to other writers such as Marshal, who praised her for managing to illustrate the plight of Haiti to the other world through creating a picture of the sufferings they endured. [incomplete sentence] [Also, you don’t need that second “other” in the sentence.] More so, she has managed to bring out the suffering immigrants go through trying to adapt to their new environment and change of cultural ways. About her family, she managed to publish the book Brother I am dying to illustrate the life of their uncle and Aunty, who had taken care of them after their parents left. Besides, in 2017, she published In the Art of Death, Writing the Final Story, a book that evaluates how writers incorporate death as a theme in their works. Moreover, the text indicates the story behind the death of her mother (Collins, 2019).
In conclusion, [Saying “in conclusion” weakens your conclusion because it tells us that it’s the conclusion, rather than letting us experience and feel the conclusion for ourselves. You have to make sure the conclusion is a strong ending so that you don’t have to say “in conclusion.”] Edwidge Danticat has gradually developed her career from her first article in the teen magazine to become a renowned writer who has won various awards for her works. Beginning from a humble background in Haiti, she managed to join a cluster of famous writers in America.

[Marie, you have some good writing here, in the way that you arrange your words, sentences, and information. And you’ve done some good research, about Danticat’s life and books and why she wrote those books. And except for a few errors that you have to watch out for and learn how to fix, your grammar and punctuation are good. However, you have major revisions to make on your paper: Remember we spoke a lot about how the paper is not an overview of the author’s life, but a focusing in on an aspect of her life and how that, and an aspect of her culture affected an aspect of her art? Now, you are on to something great with what you’ve done, because you are focusing in on how what Danticat experienced as a child, and how the culture and political and historical situations she lived through in Haiti led to what she wrote (her art). You told us of the books and what they are each about, but you did not give us an examples from excerpts and quotes of the books. First, and most iporatantly, you have to come up with a thesis, which we talked about a lot. Your thesis should be a concise sentence or two, giving your theory about how an aspect of her life and her culture (in this case the political/historical being very important) affected those things you say her books are about. But you need to show us, not just tell us. Remember we looked at Pichamon’s paper, and her thesis, which is the last sentence of her first paragraph? And remember we looked at how she focused on one Jackson novel and one Jackson short story, to support her thesis? And remember I told you to look over her paper to see how she quoted excerpts of those two works, throughout her paper, and how she gave her own analysis of those works? I want you to do that with Danticat’s work. And I know you have a strong personal connection to Danticat’s work and culture. Therefore, you can share some of your personal connections to it in your paper. And that, and/or a quote from one of the books, or just from Danticat herself, can be a strong hook. Remember we talked about hooks, and we looked at Pichamon’s first two sentences, which are strong hooks? And, although I like that you tell us about the different books of Danticat’s and what they are about, and how they are about things from Danticat’s life and culture, and should still do that in your revised paper, I want you to then focus in on the works themselves, to support the thesis you are going to develop. Now, if you want to you can give examples from all the works of hers that you’ve listed in your paper. Or, you can focus in on one or two (as Pichamon did) or however many you want to. But the most important thing is that you show more than tell. When you do tell, you then need to show, to support, with specificity, what you’ve told us. With your eloquence, intelligence, passion, sensitivity, and life experience, I know you can bring this paper up from a B to not only a B+ but to an A for your revision, which will be your final. You are one of a handful of my very best students, and you are especially leading the way with your Blackboard posts, which are profound, and so I am excited to see what you can do with this research paper. Please write me if you have any questions at all about any of the marks I made on your paper, or anything I wrote on it. And if we need to, we can have another phonecall to look it over together.
