Marcus is currently enrolled at a local community college, but he is struggling in his classes and he just lost his job because he repeatedly failed to show up for work or notify his employer of his expected absence. Several months ago, Marcus was seriously injured in a car accident, and although he has recovered from his injuries, he became dependent on prescription pain medication during his rehabilitation. He has now turned to illegally purchasing prescription medications because he no longer has lawful access to the drugs.

Last week when Marcus was attending a concert at a local park one evening, he spotted a purse on the seat in front of him and noticed that its owner was deeply engaged in conversation with her companion. Marcus grabbed the purse and left the venue and returned to his apartment.

Marcus searched the purse for anything of value and found a wallet with $180.00 in cash along with the owner’s driver’s license and credit cards. When he saw the photo on the license, he immediately recognized that the owner of the purse was a local news anchor. In addition to the money in the wallet, he also discovered compromising photographs of the owner with several men other than her husband. The next day, he seized the opportunity to make some additional money and placed a call to the news anchor. During the call, he threatened to make the compromising photographs public unless she paid him $10,000. She reluctantly agreed to pay the money, fearing public embarrassment and the threat to her marriage.
