Hurricane Felix
In the summer of 95, my family and I were vacationing in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Our
family vacation was always taken in August. That year it was unforgettable. We rented a
wooden beach house that was located ocean side. The second day into our trip it began to
downpour, The beaches were closed and the red flags went up not allowing anyone to
swim. There was a hurricane threatening landfall. The locals started boarding up their
stores and restaurants. I remember we went out to Kitty Hawk Pizza for dinner and the
front was completely boarded up except for the door. Stores had spray-painted go away
Felix across the boards that covered their windows. It looked like an old battered town.
Local police were encouraging vacationers to begin to evacuate. Upon returning from
dinner the third evening we received a call from the beach house owner asking us to pull
out the boards from his storage shed and close up his house. Mandatory evacuation due to
Hurricane Felix. We packed our car in the heavy rain and winds. Boarded up the house
and made our way to the main road.
The Outer Banks only has one road in and one road out. So we sat in the pounding rain and
winds for hours on end. The storm that sent us packing for home cutting my vacation short
leading me to meet my husband. Since we had to evacuate and return home. I went with a
friend to our local pool for a party. If I would have still been on vacation I would have
never met my husband at the pool. The interesting part is we had both attended the same
pool for years. He knew my grandparents and they knew him. We had just never met.
Needless to say without the occurrence of Hurrican Felix we probably would not have met

the summer before I graduated high school. My husband of 18 years and two beautiful
daughters are a blessing.
Hurricane Felix caused an immense amount of damage to the East Coast in August of 95. It
began as a tropical wave out in the Atlantic Ocean building up to tropical depression.
From there it became a category four hurricane. Felix created waves and rip currents that
caused beach erosion. High waves washed out roads. Gusts of winds were clocked at
68mph (Hurricane Felix, 2019). As the stormed raged it displaced sand which grew to 5ft.
After the storm passed many months passed while working on fixing the erosion it had
caused.
Hurricanes arise in tropical latitudes usually in the summer and fall. Even when renting the
wooden beach house in the Outer Banks they tell you to purchase the insurance because it
is hurricane season. Warm seas create a humid air mass. The warm air begins to rise which
forms low pressure. Once the temperature reaches 28 degrees the air begins to circulate
around the low pressure. A storm can manufacture into a hurricane in less than three days.
The hurricane has high winds except in the eye where the air is moving in an upward
motion (Coyne). Tornadoes can also be generated by hurricanes. In this instance, it did
not.
Hurricane Felix was tracked very closely and accurately by the meteorologist with advanced
technology. They were able to give up to date predictions for the storm. They were able to
give a timeline when the storm would be expected to hit landfall. Also, it was able to
predict wind speeds and rainfall amounts. NWP known as Numerical Weather Prediction

is atmospheric data from several sources all entered into one supercomputer that will use
complex mathematical models to calculate movement & outcome of the storm. Using
these advanced methods technology it will help prevent damage to homes and have people
evacuate before it is too late. Hurricane Felix caused three deaths in North Carolina along
with beach erosion and a large amount of property damage (Preliminary).
