An I-Search paper is a first-person narrative (from your “I” perspective) where you reflect upon the process of learning more about a given topic. Your I-Search paper must address the following elements to be eligible for full credit:
Explain what you already know about the specified topic. You should not look anything up for this portion. Instead, simply discuss your prior knowledge; what do you know, and where did you learn it?
React to the videos and reading for the week.
For the reading, answer the following questions:
What is the author’s primary argument (thesis)?
What evidence does the author use? Be as specific as possible about the author’s sources.
For the videos, answer the following question:
How do the videos supplement the reading? Here you can discuss connections between the videos, and/or explain how the videos helped you understand some aspect of the reading (or vice-versa).
Formulate 2-3 research questions about that unit’s topic. Discuss what you’re most curious about with regard to the specified topic after watching the videos and completing the week’s reading. These questions will guide your own independent research.
Outline the steps you’ve taken to find answers to your 2-3 questions. To successfully complete this course, you must rapidly cultivate a competence in using academic databases (more info on this below, in the Unit 1 instructions) to find information about historical topics.
For this final step, name at least 2 secondary (peer-reviewed) sources you’ve found on academic databases, as well as 1 primary source you’ve found, for at least 3 sources total. You only have to skim over these sources, and discuss briefly how you think they relate to your research questions, and how they might help you find answers. I will be posting a few primary sources in each unit’s update post (on the Announcements page), to help you get started on finding primaries, as that can be a little challenging.
