A man writes that “in a country that prides itself on family values, we can do a better job of valuing families – moms, children, and us dads as well. You can’t have family values without valuing fathers. . . With my first two children, I dealt with this inequality. It’s unfair to my wife and family, and to other dads and their families.” Would these kinds of actions/statements by men help change the status quo cultural norms around gender roles at work, and the perception about women as the primary caretakers of children? Since the family dynamic has changed in the last couple decades, it’s just not women who are the primary caretakers of children nowadays. Same-sex couples and transgender people are also raising children (through adoption and other means). How would the gendered policy around family affect those families? By now we have realized that the dual-earning household are a reality and one that cannot be easily changed whether people like it or not. How should the employers, government and the general public respond to work-family conflict in the U.S. society? And why?
