Diagnostic Essay

This activity is designed to assess your skill at reading and responding to a sample text. It is absolutely not graded. I am looking for a snapshot of your writing skills at this moment at the beginning of our course.

Please take about 60 minutes to complete this assignment.

You should have some scratch paper available for taking notes as you’re reading and brainstorming and planning your writing.

Instructions

1. Read the article below. As you read, take notes on your own paper about the main points, your reactions, and your questions.

2. Write a one-paragraph summary. Please label it Summary. Begin the summary with an opening sentence that includes the author’s name, article title, and overall main idea of the article. Follow the main idea with the text’s major points. All ideas should be paraphrased (written in your own words).

3. Write a developed, one-paragraph response to some aspect of the article. Please label it Response. A response is your own ideas and reaction to the ideas in the article. In your response, focus on one or more of the ideas in the article that you can relate to, that you may have had experience with. What do you have opinions about? What do you want to know more about. Quote a sentence or idea in the article and respond to the quotation.

4. Now tell one of your own stories about how the virus has affected your life. How has it affected you and your family: jobs, schools, house, happiness, unhappiness? Has there been anything positive to come out of the experience so far?

Suggestions for Writing

1. Plan your summary and responses before writing them. Use a writing process that you are comfortable with that can include brainstorming, free writing, listing, outlining, pre-thinking, pre-writing, etc.

2. Aim to use conventional grammar and sentence structure and to make the tone of your essay professional, not casual.

3. Edit your work before submitting it.
