Describe and analyze the viewpoints of people who opposed American imperialism.

Complete an essay based on one of the prompts listed below. The final product should be at least 1250 words (roughly five pages). The only sources required for this essay are the primary and secondary sources in Kristin Hoganson’s American Empire at the Turn of the Twentieth Century. Select at least eight primary sources to analyze and support your answer. Cite the introductory essay (a secondary source) as needed to provide background information.

1-Describe and analyze the viewpoints of people who opposed American imperialism. What was their vision of the United States and how did it differ from those who supported imperialism? Do you think that people who criticized the government’s imperialist policies were unpatriotic? Why or why not? Quote and cite your sources to support your points.

2-In what ways did existing ideas about race, class, gender, region,sexuality, and national origin influence the rise of American imperialism? Choose three of these characteristics to discuss in your essay. How did people use these ideas to support imperialist initiatives? Quote and cite your sources to support your points.

Citations and Bibliography

All quotes and summaries of information gleaned from texts require citations. Since we are all using Kristin Hoganson’s American Empire at the Turn of the Twentieth Century, you may note the author’s name and the page number (the location number in an e-book) as a citation.
For example: In his 1915 essay called “Ownership of Materials and Men in the Darker World,” the scholar W.E.B. Du Bois argued that “We must extend the democratic ideal to the yellow, brown, and black peoples” (Du Bois, 46).
Include a Works Cited page that lists the author, document title, and date for each primary source you used.
