In coming up with a proposal, it is essential to understand the underlying issues that
would raise important questions. These questions will be the basis of the research and its
findings.
I.
What implication does the deportation have on Latino children?
This question will seek to understand how Latino children will be affected by
deportation. More profoundly, it would be used to show how the children will be affected. The
effects, in this case, could either be negative or positive. Digging to find the implications will be
significant in explaining why deportation needs to be stopped or encouraged. Understanding the
effect and factors that would lead to these effects is an essential step in this research. The overall
overview of the question is in helping understand how the children are affected by deportation.

What are the social implications of deportation on the welfare of Latino children?
Children are affected by many issues in different ways. This research question would be
used to delve deep into how Latino children would be affected socially. In this context, it would
be easy even to understand how to overcome these challenges as they can derail the well-being
of the children. This research question would also be used to shed more light into the initiatives
being taken to reduce instances of deportation on Latino children. By answering this question, I
would be developing dynamics into understanding how Latino children are deported and how
this affects their adulthood. Preventing deportations for these children would automatically
reduce the implications for them.

How are Latino families affected by the deportation of their kids?
It is difficult to understand how families are affected until they are asked about this.
However, this question will be useful in showing how relationships between children and

families will be affected. In another way, answering this question will touch on how these
deportations can be reduced, and this minimizes cases of family break ups. Latino families and
parents certainly have a role to play in these deportations, and therefore this question would be of
value to researchers who are interested in the social welfare of Latino families. The last
important factor in this question is in helping to understand the push factors leading to
deportations of the children.
Description of Research Methods
Description of Research Methods
This study aims to examine the effects of deportation on Latino children such as the
social implications and how the Latino families are affected by the deportation of their children. I
also aim at investigating the experience of deportation on the Children’s and parents’ emotional
well-being. To achieve the purpose of this research, I will use several qualitative research
methods such as one-on-one interview and focus group discussion.
Personal and phone call interview
I will use interviews to collect in-depth information in one-on-one settings so that I can
understand how Latino parents are affected by the deportation of the children. I will conduct an
open-ended interview, and the same questions will be asked to all interviews in the same
category; for example, the Latino parents whose children were deported will be asked the same
open-ended questions. A standardized open-ended interview is a right approach that will enable
me to conduct faster interviews which I can analyze and compare with others. I will carry a oneon-one interview with Latino parents. All the respondents will be interviewed in English or
Spanish with the help of a translator, but I will prefer participants who understand and speak
English. I will identify the Latino parents whose sons or daughter have been deported, but I will
discuss more under the recruitments process. The personnel investigation is suitable for this
study because it will allow me to collect enough and relevant information from the interviewees
(Alshenqeeti, 2014). I will carry out one-on-one interviews in a structured way. I will use preset
questions to carry out the interview. Interview questions will be asked in a rigid procedure
following the order which has been prescribed. I will tape record the interviews while at the
same time take short notes.
Telephone interview
The deported Latino Children are indeed not in the country, and it will not be possible to
meet them face to face. However, I will reach them through a telephone call. I will also
interview a children’s expert and an officer working at the Latino children’s detention camp to
find out their opinion and observation on how the deported children are affected. I will choose a
setting which is free from distraction and is convenient to the interviewee. I will then explain to
the participants the aim of the study, the measures which have been put in place to ensure the
confidentiality of the participants and the duration of the interview (Alshenqeeti, 2014). I will
allow the interviewee to raise any doubts they have about the interview.
Focus group discussion
The focus group discussion is a qualitative research method that I will use to collect data.
I involve six parents of the deported Latino Children in a focus group discussion. A focus group
discussion is cost-effective beside it can help me answer the research questions. I will create a
list of discussion topics to guide the discussion, and then I will seek an informed consent of the
participants. I will be the facilitator of the focus group discussion, and I will not only manage the
existing relationships, but I will also create a comfortable environment for the participants. As
the discussion continues, I will observe and take note of the participant’s non-verbal expressions
such as tonal variation and facial expression. Some of the methods that I will use to collect data
during the focus group discussion are note-taking, audio and tape recording and observation of
the participants’ emotions non-verbal communications. The discussion will be recorded, and
short notes will be taken as well (O Nyumba et al., 2018). The focus group discussions will be
carried in one day in three sessions each lasting for one hour, and during each session, a different
theme will be discussed.
Ethical considerations
This study will involve people. Therefore, I will vigorously follow ethical considerations.
The primary research method which I will use in the study is an interview. An interview is
usually viewed as an intrusion into the participants’ personal lives. I will consider the time
allotted to the interview and level of sensitivity of interview questions. The participants will be
required to provide informed consent before taking part in the interview. I will also assure the
participants that the information collected would be confidential and shall not be exposed to a
third party (O Nyumba et al., 2018). I will inform the participants that their involvement in the
study is voluntary. Therefore they can choose to stop participating at any time, but most
importantly, I will design a consent form which will be distributed amongst the participants to
sign.
Instruments
One of the instruments that will be needed is the informed consent document that will be
signed by the participants. Another instrument that is needed is the audio and tape recorders.
These will be used to records interviews and focus group discussions. I will also need notebooks
and a pen. The participants will also be given $10 as an appreciating for participating in the
study. The interview will be carried for six days. Each day I will interview two parents, and each
interview session will take two hours with a thirty-minute break in between. But the telephone
interview will be done for about forty-five minutes. The focus group discussion held in a day and
this will be done in three sessions each lasting for one hour with a 30-minute break in between.
Recruitment of Participants
This study aim at finding out how the deported Latino Children and their parents are
affected and to do this, suitable participants will be recruited. The recruitment of participants
can sometimes be an expensive and challenging process. There are several methods used by
researchers to recruit participants such as telephone, door to door canvassing and recruitment
questionnaires (Newington & Metcalfe, 2014). However, in this research, I will use the local
network and contacts to identify potential participants. I will reach out to the local Latino
immigrant community organization and request the contact of Latino parents whose children
were deported. The participants will be drawn from the local immigrant Latino community, and
a comparison of how they are affected by the deportation of their children will be made. The
first group of participants will be a local Latino immigrant and must be an adult whose son or the
government has deported daughter. The second group will be a Latino Child who is at least
sixteen years who was deported together with one parent while the other remains in the US. This
second group will be identified through the parent who was not deported and stays in a local
Latino community. A total of six Latino parents who meet the criteria mentioned above will be
contacted and invited for a meeting at a place of their convenience for detailed deliberations on
the interview. I will request the contact of their children who had been deported to deliberate
with them via a telephone call. A total of 12 participants will be involved in the study, six
immigrant Latino parents and six children. The parents who participate in the interview will also
be the ones who take part in the focus group.

Informed consent for participating in a study

to take part in the study. It is not a must that you make up your mind on whether or not be part of
the study. Before you volunteer, you are free to consult a few people about it.
Purpose of the Research
The government has intensified the deportation of Latino Children, and this has affected not only
the parents but also the children as well. As we know, everyone wishes to be close to his or her
child, but it seems that the government is continuing with the deportation oblivious of its effects.
I believe that if the state can be aware of the devastating consequences of this act, then they can
stop it. I would, therefore, like to know from you how you feel since your child was deported.
The type of research
You will be required to participate in a personal interview and a group discussion which will take
one hour and three hours respectively. The group discussion will be composed of others who are
in the same situation as yours, and your confidentiality will not be compromised.
Reason for selection

Literature review: The effects of deportation of Latino children
Introduction
The rapid rise and enacting of laws targeting undocumented immigrants have raised
concerns on their welfare. These laws have instilled fear in the immigrant families in the US, and
the uncertainty of their stay in the US and possible deportation remains in their heads every day
(Chavez, 2012). Apart from fear, they also face other oppressions such as denial of access to
services such as medical care. This paper focuses on the impacts of laws and policies of
undocumented immigrants on US-born children and their undocumented parents.
Social impact
Research by Chen et al. (115) found that the number of American immigrants increases
every year and indication that there are many children affected by immigration policies. The
authors investigated and addressed the problems the children face at the hands of the federal
government through restrictive immigration laws. Over the years, the administration has been
keen on reducing the number of undocumented immigrants in the US. The case is much
complicated for immigrant children who get to the US without any parents or guardian. The
category of these children becomes stateless, and hence they get considered as illegal immigrants
in the country (Chen, 115). According to the law, unaccompanied children should be charged
with an unlawful stay in the US. The author focuses on the state of the undocumented children
who are apprehended at the border as they tried to enter the US and kept in detention camps

along the borders. The government took such an action because there was a worrying increase in
the number of undocumented children in the US. The government through the support of courts
forcefully deports the immigrants. Unfortunately, the undocumented children find it difficult in
fighting for their fate through the court unless they a caregiver to support them; otherwise, they
remain under deportation threat. The author states that there is still hope for undocumented
children despite these immigration laws and policies. Even though there exist protective laws
that could play a vital role in safeguarding and legalizing their stay, getting the legal status in the
US for any immigrants under undocumented category remains a challenge. The fate of these
children still hangs in the balance because the society does not support them and it is not
guaranteed that reforms will be made in their favor.
In another study, Menjivar (315) explores the effect of transnational parents and how the
children get affected by immigration laws. The authors surveyed the immigrants from Honduras
and Guatemala to find out how the children have been affected by the deportation of their
parents. Also, the authors examined how children are emotionally affected by deportation
threats. Most of the immigrant under the study was categorized as undocumented (Menjívar,
315). These immigrants may have enjoyed previous laws that gave them a specific duration of
stay. However, once the stay duration has gotten over, then parents are separated from their
children. This separation certainly has adverse effects on both the parents and children. The
government’s policy prohibits the undocumented immigrants to have a permanent residence;
therefore after their stay time has expired, they have to be deported. Moreover, the laws and
policies on immigration keep getting more strictly making it difficult for immigrants to find it
suitable and comfortable to stay in a foreign country. The immigrants are not only separated
from their families but also from the society they may have adapted to during their stay.

One of the most significant emotional stressors imposed on Mexican children living in
the United States is the forced transnationality of the family and the deportation of one of the
family members. The fact that the children born in the United States automatically receive
permanent residence permit and American citizenship has motivated many immigrants to spouse
American citizens. As pointed out by Ybarra et al. (34) the transnationality of such families
implies that the family gets forced to separate upon the deportation of the Mexican parent. These
families complain that they only need to remain together and beg not to get separated from their
children.
Emotional Impact
Gallo et al. (290) explore the psychological impacts of immigration policies on children
and their parents. The author examines the effects of the vulnerability of the immigrants to
deportation and separation from their families. The study conducted in the US finds that, many
of the children whose parents are undocumented live with depression. The authors seek to
understand the possibilities and prevalence of the mental health effects as a result of the
immigration policies. The study finds that the children are either directly or indirectly affected by
the psychological impacts of the systems (Gallo, 190).
In most cases, the parent is either depressed or stressed by the pressure from the policies
and the deportation threats. The indirect effects on the children get seen through their poor
relationship with their parents, which is worse in case the parents already suffer from mental
health as a result. The emotional impact grows higher in the case of children whose
undocumented parent’s faces deportation.
In a different study, the author explores the possible emotional experiences of the
deportation. In this case, they focused on Mexican parents and subjected them to a psychological
