Definition of Melody and And Motif Questions There’s a transcription of the television script for “What is a Melody?” you will read (in Dropbox), but here’s a link to watch it
so you can also hear the listening examples, which is an important element to really understanding some of these definitions. After doing so, you should be able to answer the following questions:
– According to Bernstein, what is a melody? And how does a melody differ from a motif? Use at least one of the examples he discusses to help illustrate his definition of each of these two terms. (note: he covers this at both the beginning & end of the lecture—be sure to listen to the entire recording and read the entire transcription before answering this question)
– Bernstein discusses the issue with the Wagner example at length. Discuss some of the reasons why some listeners have trouble identifying the example as a melody, and what Bernstein suggests to correct it (use the word counterpoint in your discussion).
– Bernstein also discusses an example from a Mozart symphony. Why is this example easier to identify as a melody? Do you agree or disagree?
Each prompt should be responded to in no less than one paragraph (of at least 7 sentences) for full credit. The entire assignment should be SINGLE spaced, and up to TWO pages.
