Submit your Fashion Resource Book entry for this module.

Focus on forms of leisure dress by finding historical examples and recent fashion examples.

Your entry should meet the following requirements:

Include two images of key fashion moments from historical sources.
Include two images of current fashion obtained from current sources. Current fashions should be from the late-20th and 21st centuries.
Include a short caption under each image to identify and describe each example, using course vocabulary and concepts from this module.
Cite all research sources.
Submit all entries in JPEG format.

Hi Jihwan : so just a point for consideration and clarification from this module :
example 1 is excellent : looks to be an 18 century portrait of a lady at leisure in a version of the robe en chemise (worn for leisure activities like
hanging out )
the recent example however , although it does look similar in fabric choice to the robe en chemise , it is worn for a ceremonial purpose and
would not be considered an example of modern leisure or casual dress..
example 2 , the English gown is not a night gown but was a fashionable dress for casual events outside of the court when engaging in leisure
activities

for women satin joggers and a cashmere t shirt worn with designer sneakers and a Birken !

Robe en Chemise, this dress style became very popular. Simple white gowns were adopted by women all over Europe. From around 1785 to the
end of the 18th century, the chemise gown was the height of fashion, these gowns were an understated marker of status. By the 1790s, the
chemise gown dominated women’s fashion and was worn by elite women all over the European continent.



Women’s habit de cour was traditionally the robe à la française. These were large gowns with paniers covered with frills, beads, precious stones
and strass, and were part and parcel of the sumptuous court ceremonies. Madame Adélaïde, Louis XV’s daughter, is depicted in court attire with a
long train of red velvet, a sign of nobility.



In my opinion, Elie Saab’s design is very similar to Robe Francaise, with emphasis on the pleated front and shoulders. Elie’s design can fully reflect




Introduction
According to sociologist Thorsten Veblen, inactivity (leisure) is a luxury good, the
possession of which signals status and requires a category of dress in which status is
encoded. In this module, we will explore how this code of dress develops from 17thcentury undress into 18th-century fashionable forms of leisure dress.
