BILM Assignments – Rules & Guidelines
1) ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & HONESTY: When submitting an assignment, you are confirming that you have adhered to Bahrain
Polytechnic’s policy on academic integrity and honesty including using APA referencing appropriately. Any violation of this will
be dealt with as stipulated in the policy.
LATE SUBMISSIONS: Late assignments are deducted 5 marks from your achieved mark for each 24-hour period after the due
date. For example, an assessment which has been graded as 73% will be reduced to 68% for the first 24 hours late, and to 63%
if late for a further 24 hours and so on. This applies to every day of the week including the weekend and all public holidays.
Assignments which receive a negative mark will receive a final mark of zero.
EXTENSIONS: On application, in writing, tutors may approve an extension up to a maximum of two (2) days (including the
weekend and public holidays) for an individual assignment. Applications for extensions must be received no later than 72 hours
(3 days) before the due date. Only one extension per course will be given. Extensions will not be given for group work, tests or
exams.
WORD LIMIT: All assignments have a required word limit which we permit a variation of +/-10%. For example, an assignment
with a 2000-word limit means that you can submit between 1800 to 2200 words. These words come from the main body of
your writing i.e. your introduction to your conclusion. We do not include title pages, contents pages, reference lists or
appendices. In-text referencing is included in the word count. Submissions which are substantially under the word limit will
receive a low mark for failing to answer the question fully. If a submission is over the word limit, the tutor will stop marking at
that point where it is 10% over (e.g. 3300 words for an assignment with a 3000-word limit). You will not receive any marks for
work that is submitted outside of the maximum word limit.

Introduction
This essay is about how Bahrain has in the recent years developed the new Khalifa Bin Salman Port and
what are the geographical factors and technological changes that have occurred over the last 100 years
which have made it both necessary and possible for the first Mina Salman and then Khalifa Bin Salman
Port to be constructed and that also includes the shallow water and dredging that have been done and
also the land reclamation, and also the advantages of Khalifa Bin Salman Port location compared to Mina
Salman Port.

Body
Shallow water
shallow water is a disadvantage for the huge ships because they can’t come closer to the port. At Mina
Salman Port the ships stop 6km away because of the shallow water but later when the Khalifa Bin
Salman Port have built, they didn’t have any problem of the shallow water and ships of all kinds and sizes
and stop near the port.
How oil impacted ports
the richness of oil could be optimistic for freight rates. Freights are defined as the goods that are
transported by land, air or water. (dictionary.com, n.d.).About half of the 100m bpd of the world crude
demand is exported by water or sea so it is an important factor to keep in consideration. a world of
significantly lower oil prices, the cost of transportation will become more important,” Poten explained in a
report. “Everything else being equal, it will tend to favour the short-haul suppliers over the long-haul
producers. “a change in oil price can result to higher levels of freight. with the drop of oil prices. Higher
revenues from low bunker prices and more freight rates have permitted shipping companies to divert
significant funds for purchase of new buildings and second-hand vessels. An increase in storage tankers
can be expected as this will be a plan to consider in hope of oil prices rising in the future. (How will an oil
price war impact shipping?, 2020)
Dredging
7
Dredging is an operation that removes the rubbish like sea weed and sands and stones and also digs the
ground more so it can make it easier for ships to come near the land or shipping area. GLDD completed
its contract with the Government of Bahrain for the construction of the expansion of Khalifa Bin Salman
Port and Industrial Area in Hidd, Bahrain in 2005. This project entailed dredging 31,000,000 cubic yards
of material to be utilised for building land for the new port, the placement of 4,000,000 tons of rock
protection and breakwater structures, and construction of a 1.1-mile-long quay wall. The depth of the
dredging is 15m Chart Datum Great Lakes used the cutter suction dredge Carolina and the trailing
suction hopper dredge Victoria Island to complete the work. (KHALIFA BIN SALMAN, 2019)
Land reclamation (maps)
Land reclamation is the process of doing a land over a sea or a river bed or oceans or lake beds. Khalifa
Bin Salman Port is built on a reclaimed land at Hidd, its 13km away from Bahrain International Airport and
also linked to Mina Salman Port by 5km and to King Fahad Causeway by 30 km drive but it is only a 1
road (highway). It reclaimed 900,000 square metres land in 2002 and was completed after 2 years. It
accepts the largest ocean-going container vessel on its hub. It is designed to initially handle up to 1.1
million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year, but for now it has had to make do with the 300,000 TEUs
of annual demand created by the local economy. It will be some time before the port will need any extra
capacity, but once it does, more cranes could easily be added to the site to take capacity to 2.5 million
TEUs a year. In comparison, the old port, which opened in 1962, had two container berths with just 600
metres of quayside and was only able to accommodate vessels with a draft of up to 10.5 metres. The port
also had berths for conventional cargo and a small ramp for roll-on/roll-off vessels of up to 15 metres in
width. Replacing it with the new port has taken 14 years of planning and development. The proposal to
build a new port was first mooted in 1995, but it was another five years before the government approved
the plan and a design study was started. Since then, there has been a series of delays. The government
didn’t want to expand Mina Salman Port because the area got filled with factories and that means that
many trucks will pass through that side and this will eventually have a negative impact to port and there
will be delays. (EDITORIAL, 2009)
8
Mina Salman port in 1975, cargo traffic through the Port of Mina Salman surpassed the port’s cargohandling capacity, with 1.5 million tons of cargo. The government of Bahrain began to modernize and
improve the port, increasing the number of jetties and berths for deep-water vessels. In 1979, the Port of
Mina Salman Container Terminal opened. Today, 80% of the cargo handled in the Port of Mina Salman is
containerized. Since the turn of the century, the port has undergoing renewed modernization efforts.
Three new berths and a finger pier were added, and new storage facilities were built. This included an
open storage area of 176 thousand square meters, a covered storage area of 120 thousand square
meters, and an open container area of 242 thousand square meters. The Port of Mina Salman Container
Terminal can handle vessels of up to 65 thousand tons DWT. Its two berths are a combined 600 meters
long, and storage area of 423 thousand square meters can accommodate up to almost 10 thousand
TEUs. Reefer plugs are available. (port of mina salman, n.d.)
Khalifa bin

King Fahad
causeway
9
Mina Salman port
King Fahad causeway
King Fahad Causeway impacts on ports
The causeway may be a four-lane road featuring two roadways. Each roadway is 11.6m wide and
includes two lanes running in opposite directions. It features a curb for emergency parking. “The 25kmlong King Fahd causeway links the dominion of Bahrain with the Eastern region of the dominion of Saudi
Arabia. “There are five bridges, totalling 12.43km long, along the route of the complete causeway. the
primary three bridges measure 934m, 2,034m, and 5,194m long and form a part of the Saudi side. The
Bahraini side of the causeway contains two bridges measuring 3,334m and 934m long. The bridges are
interconnected by islands and dams. Approximately 12.5km of the causeway has been constructed as a
dam.
The causeway also comprises seven embankments extending 12.57km long. A 660,000m² border station
at embankment no. 4 is that the largest among all. Designed as two connected islands, the border station
includes two mosques, two 65m high tower restaurants, buildings of KFCA and other government
directorates and two coastguard towers. The island on the side is designated to Saudi Arabia while that
on the side is designated to Bahrain. The 25km-long King Fahd causeway links the dominion of Bahrain
10
with the Eastern region of the dominion of Saudi Arabia. Crossing the Gulf of Bahrain, within the gulf, the
causeway starts in Saudi Arabia at Al-Aziziya, south of AL Khobar, and extends up to Al-Jasra, west of
Manama in Bahrain. It comprises two segments, an extended bridge from Khobar to Nasan Island in
Bahrain and a shorter stretch from Nasan Island to the most island of Bahrain. The $1.2bn project was
officially launched to the public in 1986. On a mean, it serves about 45,000 vehicles on a daily basis that
increases to about 60,000 vehicles during weekends. it had been employed by 17.7 million passengers in
2008. The causeway was built by Dutch contractor Ballast Nedam and financed entirely by the dominion
of Saudi Arabia and King Fahd Causeway Authority (KFCA) is that the operator. A $5m expansion to the
causeway was announced in July 2010. The expansion aims to extend the departure and arrival lanes on
each side of the causeway. (King Fahd Causeway, n.d.)
Conclusion
Difference between the two ports.
The Khalifa bin Salman port is an improved facility which includes technological advancements that is of
advantage over mina Salman port such as. advance communication systems. Furthermore. The overall
improvement includes responding instantly to
Shipment needs and does not delay the ships at anchor. This will result in increasing the satisfaction of
service of clients. The Khalifa bin Salman port has been established in a strategical area that is excellent
for the shipments when compared to mina Salman which is located in an area full of movements and
other companies That might cause delays. The Khalifa bin Salman port is located in the middle of the
Arabian gulf which offers great capacity, effective operations, fast turn-around times for vessels and short
transit periods The port stands in the middle of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) that’s makes Bahrain
a great choice for carriers trans-shipping containers to the important and instantly increasing Gulf region,
particularly the markets of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iraq. (Bahrain Gateway: Khalifa Bin Salman
Port profile, 2011)
Khalifa bin Salman is established in a way that is suitable for the 21st century shipment needs. The
location is estimated to be of 900,000m2. Furthermore, the port has been created in a way that allows for
future expansion and improvement.
11
For the flowing reasons. the differences between mina Salman port and Khalifa bin Salman port reflects
that Khalifa bin Salman is a better facility with improved technological advancements that help meet the
wants and need of the 21st century shipping procedures and requirements.
