Cuyamaca College Watchmen Novel Rhetorical Essay Be sure you have read the Guidelines for Essay #2 very carefully before drafting. Please submit a doc, docx, or pdf version of your rough draft here. Use the following highlighting pattern in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, and be sure to use lighter versions of these colors so that I can read your draft. While the final draft must be 1,500-2,500 words, you should aim for a minimum of 1,000 words for this rough draft. Please note that this draft will be graded credit/no-credit and awarded 1 point per 100 words, up to 10 points. Once I have read your draft, I will provide feedback for you (in person, by telephone, via Zoom, or in Canvas, depending on what you choose). More information about that is located in 4.9 Schedule Conference with Instructor. Please indicate in the Submission Comment when you submit your paper, which type of feedback you prefer, and if you did decide to make an appointment with me via the Canvas Scheduler, indicate which day/time we are meeting and which type of conference. If you do not want to schedule an appointment with me, just write “Written Feedback” in the Submission Comments.Thesis Statement=Yellow (Last sentence of introduction)Topic Sentences=Green (Should be first sentence of each body paragraph)Topics or Points of Comparison=Bold (Hopefully, you have one topic for each body paragraph. This should be one word or phrase.I need the essay to be around 2,000 words, ignore the rough draft part. In the attached pdf, it explains how the essay is supposed to be written, and what each paragraph needs to have. Watchmen Rhetorical Analysis
You have read the graphic novel, Watchmen, written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave
Gibbons. You have also already completed a comparative rhetorical analysis essay and learned
about many different rhetorical strategies authors use to convey meaning effectively and enhance
their arguments. Using both the dialogue and the images within the graphic novel, write a
rhetorical analysis, answering the following key question:
Key Question
What rhetorical strategies did Moore, Gibbons, and Higgins use to convey the written and visual
elements within the graphic novel in order to enhance or heighten the reader’s experience, and how
did these strategies make the story more effective and accessible to the reader?
? Purpose: Analyze and evaluate rhetorical choices in a complex, non-traditional text.
? Audience: A comic book fan who has already read Watchmen.
? Point-of-View: 3rd person (avoid “I” or “you” pronouns in this paper)
? Requirements:
o The MLA-formatted essay must be 1,500-2,500 words. No Works Cited page is necessary.
o Students must include 5-10 relevant images from the graphic novel. Google Image Search is
a great option for finding a specific image. If using a digital copy, you can also take a screen
shot with your device. If using a hard copy, you can take a picture with your phone.
o Alan Moore is the writer; Dave Gibbons is the artist; John Higgins is the colorist. All three
should be mentioned in the introduction and elsewhere, and it is important to distinguish
between the three when giving credit for an example.
o Students must highlight their essays in Microsoft Word or Google Docs using the pattern
below before submitting the rough draft or final draft on Canvas. In both the rough draft
and final draft submission area, there is a highlighted student sample to help you with this.
?
Thesis=Yellow (Introduction)
?
Topic Sentences=Green & Topics=Bold (One per body paragraph)
? Tips for Being Successful:
o Your essay should focus on evaluating the graphic novel’s rhetorical elements and should
avoid personal opinions. In other words, this is not an agree/disagree exercise.
o Consider adding in at least one example of a strategy that could have been more effective.
In other words, add in your own counterargument/rebuttal.
o For each body paragraph, provide both written and visual examples from the graphic novel.
In addition to actually embedding images from the graphic novel, be sure to describe what
is happening or what something looks like when analyzing it.
o Choose an effective structure for your paper. Here is a suggested pattern:
?
?
Introduction:
?
Begin with 1-2 sentences about the topic: comic books/graphic novels.
?
Briefly summarize in the graphic novel in 1-2 sentences.
?
Introduce the three men who collaborated on this work by full name.
?
End with a thesis statement that answers the key question specifically.
Body Paragraphs:
?
Aim for 4-6 body paragraphs.
?
Below is a list of possible types of questions you could answer in one or
several of your body paragraphs:
o Which rhetorical appeals (logos, pathos, ethos) were used to build
characters within the story? Were there any fallacies used to
demonstrate that a character had faulty logic?
o Were certain colors used to enhance emotions (the appeal to
pathos), such as fear, happiness, sadness, nostalgia, outrage, etc.?
o Were certain objects or the expressions/movements of characters
used to enhance or demonstrate the emotions of characters (appeal
to pathos)?
o How was the story organized (which strategies were used), and did it
enhance or detract from the plot?
o What literary devices were used to enhance the dialogue, the plot, or
characterization?
?
Conclusion:
?
Begin by restating your thesis in different words (do not copy and paste).
?
Reiterate your key points.
?
End with a global (general statement) about the topic of comic
books/graphic novels or the importance of rhetorical analysis.
